Before you read, consider I am only rep 7 or 8.

I am not sure what you mean by the first question, but if you want to utilize your defense as well as you can, you must do it by using all tools. The zone is generally the most effective, the fullblock if the most iconic, but you have access to basic parries, dodges, superior dodges (better deflects) and superior heavies. Use them all to counter, they all have some weaknesses, but there isn't a move that beats them all, just keep your counters versitile. Sometimes, you can use shieldbash or light to stop some slow attacks (like raider zones). Sometimes, it is best to just block.

Superior heavies are activated if you throw the heavy slightly before the parry timing. I think it can be used consistently with practice, and if you fail, you still get a parry. I think the window is bigger if you are charging the heavy. It is important to note that it is only guaranteed on long recovery attacks, like heavies.

Superior block on heavy occurs a couple frames before the parry timing, so basically just go for a "parry" slightly earlier than normal. You'll need some practice. Be conscious when trying to parry an unblockable to not accidentally go for a superior block timing.

You have multiple option selects as Conqueror. Most notably the zone attack which will parry and protect against a feint into guard break, feints into other attacks. Even if the opponent waits and baits the zone to parry it, you get out only taking a heavy parry punish worth of damage. A drawback is that it's a lot of stamina to use up so you need to use it sparingly depending on who you're up against.

Another option select is the charging heavy, just hold down the heavy button when going for a parry and canceling it out immediately. This is weak to attacks that can feign into a guard break.

Ideally you should mix up between these two.

The superior block of dodging is instant, whereas guard switching would normally take 100ms, so it's ideal against fast attacks that can't be feigned into guard break. It'll get you out of the lawbringer's follow up lights after a push basically for free in comparison to other classes.

Full block stance is purely predictive. You might be able to do it on reaction to long heavies but these have the possibility to be feigned into a guard break so it's still a read that the heavy will be committed to. So you need to notice patterns from your opponent, there's also certain times an opponent will whiff an attack to get into a combo, telegraphing that you have an opportunity to use full block.

On the flip side, once you go into full block you can then go into a top heavy on prediction to an imminent guard break. Then you can soft feign into shield uppercut if you do that and see that the guard break you predicted didn't happen mid heavy.
