    I Was Wrong.....

But it definitely opens up some possibilities.

I felt the guided rockets that are on the larger helicopters with the ‘New’ helicopter control system were unrealistic. But having done a little searching I found this.

    https://youtu.be/jZWx60IT1kw

The relevant bit runs from 3 minutes to 8 minutes.

The upshot is rocket pods can fire laser guided rockets. Further more these can be guided from an onboard or remote designator. So I thought it might be nice to have the option to equip a designator, maybe instead of a secondary weapon.
It could be good fun in coop to designate targets for friends and in single player we could either switch out mortar fire for rebel helicopter support or maybe have a couple of mission with a later update where the rebel designate a target or range of targets for us.

    What do people think?

Remote designators are typically used for over horizon or out of sight firing. None of these rockets in game turn that much for that to really be a possibility. Also you then have to hope that the lofted rocket/missile locks up with the designator otherwise they fly wide.

Considering that the choppers with guided rockets are typically stolen ones(SB or Unidad) and you need line of sight to fire seems to me that using the on board designator makes the most sense.

Well the video shows them setting the rockets coding to match the designator, so maybe with a small stretch of the imagination we could assume that process has been reversed. Take the code from the rocket and set the designator.
