    GR:W still got the magic!!

I was playing co-operatively last night with my friend. This is after having somewhat of a break from this game due to playing some of the newer games, AC Odyssey and RDR2....

Odyssey is fantastic, and RDR2 is incredibly immersive, love all the details, but the missions themselves are so heavily scripted and linear it’s jarring..

But, they all pale in comparison to GR:W...!!

Just phenomenal game and one of the best coop games I’ve played !

Me and my friend decided to change up our tactics and go all out assault with rebel support for one mission. I’m usually a stealthy player when playing on my own. So, it turned into one long massive street battle like something out of Sicario!

Such a great game — so dynamic and just different every time.

I I really REALLY appreciate how non linear it is! Especially after RDR2 (sheesh)!

    Love it!!

Debatable. I am definitely interested in seeing how RDR2's online experience will compare, but we'll have to wait on that. AI, detail, and responsiveness of the world, RDR2 pummels wildnuts.

They got two updates left to polish GRW in some way shape or form, and I bet they'll charge for three quarters of it.

Yeah, this is my favorite game. I really like the flexibility. I really like not being forced to do anything.

Agreed. I take the odd break here and there to play other games, but I always come back to Wildlands. Bought it on release day, still play it to this day. I usually hate PvP games too, but I even love Ghost War. Easily my favorite game of this kind since the PS2 SOCOM days.

All gripes and issues aside, they really ddi make a great game. Shame that all we do is point out the bad, because there are so many good points for every bad one.

Two different types of games but on that note.....

What really made GRW a game to remember for me was co-op. That was the best experience I had in a game in that regard in a long time. ......even with its shortcomings. I hated the DLC and hated the general direction Ubi went after release with most of the updates and especially Ghost War (PvP). However, my friends and I still loved playing the main game together. GRW was also the only tactical shooter on console that was as close to a mis-sim style game we've had in a long time. If I were still gaming on PC, it likely would have been a different story since there are other alternatives.

As for RDR2, the main story missions are linear but it's what ties everything together IMO and if you've played RDR1, GTAV, etc., it's expected. However, they are a relatively small part of the gameplay experience especially in RDR2 where the gameworld feels much more immersive. I've spent (spending) many hours playing the side missions, activities and simply just exploring / discovering. I still haven't finished the game. .....and my friends and I can't wait until the end of the month when the online beta launches.

The difference for me was that GRW fell short in several areas and I always had the feeling of what "could have been" while RDR2 has so far delivered nearly everything I expected from that next iteration in the franchise. ....but everyone is different and that's just my take on it.

    Regarding Immersion and/or Realism...
    RDR>Skyrim>long time nothing>GRW
    Just saying.
Besides that, just can't compare those Games.

Thanks LaMOi! Glad to hear you enjoy the flexibility of approach you can take to missions/open world situations in GRW.

I whole heatedly agree, and I think the freedom to play missions how you want in GRW really compliments the nice open game world and gives it so much replay value. Rockstar games are good for a play through or two, and usually have engaging characters, but a lot of people playing them are just drawn to the horsing around you can do. Personally I got really sick of the constant in fighting between Michael and Trevor in GTA V. Franklin was the only one I could tolerate playing as because of that.

    AI in RDR2 was disappointing.

So many places I’ve experienced the AI just ‘know’ where you are, even after breakin line of sight!

    https://youtu.be/Lg2ObEpV1Pg

In this video, you clearly see(note: needs to be viewed on a reasonably sized screen), even after breaking line of sight, and flanking around to the right, the AI all still looking in my direction!

Also, At times the AI seem to have a hive mind at times. If spotted by one, within seconds the whole base is coming to your position, and again even when breakin line of sight again, they seem to have a ‘sense’ of where you are regardless. It seems there’s no sense of escalation, feels unfair and unrealistic.

Most AI that are placed/spawn in the world are unfortunately mostly ‘tethered’ to that location. Which means they don’t chase you either at all, or not far from their spawn location. Which sucks!

Overall I’ve found stealth in RDR2 at best frustratingly limited and at worst annoyingly inconsistent.
I certainly welcome a more challenging stealth experience as long as it abides by a consistent set of rules.

My second beef with RDR2 is how clunky and laggy the controls are. Its really quite bad.
If you look at a lot of the YouTube vids of people playing, dead eye is used almost exclusively in shoot outs — there’s a reason!
In tense shoot outs, it’s significantly apparent — it gets messy and frustrating — you’re just fighting against the controls. It hurts the experience.

My third beef - which is perhaps my biggest complaint is how heavily scripted and linear the main missions are! Obnoxiously so!

One mission I did with Marston to rob a train, it was hilarious how little control the player has. I literally had to walk down the train, robbing people. But all I could do was move forward, and when Marston told me to beat someone who wasn’t handing over I beat them. In fact the game doesn’t allow you to move until you press the button to beat them...

Another mission I did — You’re trying to shoot your way out of Valentine, one of the smaller towns, with your Comrades. The game herds you down the main street, and I thought (foolishly) let me flank around the back of the Main Street buildings to get behind the enemies... Mission failed!!

    There’s ALOT of fail states!

My fourth beef is Marshall’s or bounty hunters that chase you just disappear when they can’t find you. In a game about persistence it’s jarring to see them simply pfff disappear off the map, and they’re gone!

I was playing the other day — had Marshall’s chasing me... and I was riding away from them, lost them but they were still on my mini map (indicated by that red on the edge of the mini map).
I found a big rock, climbed up and was ready to mount a defense, and they just disappeared. It’s annoying that this stuff happens in a game like this.

And it always happens. If the law or bounty hunters lose sight of you, and they are just outside the radius of your minimap — they just disappear.

GR:W is one of the least linear open world games I’ve ever played...

I honestly think for me — that and the deep customisation is the reason why it has endured so long, and I still love it!

It’s made it to my top 10 favourite games of all time
