This issue could be resolved if you could mark items for sale and they just automatically get sold when you visit a vendor. However it isnt that way and yes, it takes me forever. Selling seems to be the quickest option.

I think i said it above but its worth reiterating, should the exotic shield not be retroactive, i'll be quitting completing them there and then for the reasoning provided in the OP. Its taken long enough to get them all as it is, wont be doing that again

The problem isn't just the awkwardness of using the menu for inventory management, it's also the time/effort required to make the comparisons. Armor/Stats/Talents/Bonuses are a lot of things to have to consider all at once to make a comparison. What if the piece I need to compare it to is in the stash? It basically takes one full play session of inventory management to be sure you didn't keep anything you didn't need and didn't sell/deconstruct anything you did need.

Comparing two pieces isn't bad, but what about 3 or 4 competing pieces? What about guns with 3 talents and different rates of fire? What about multiples of those guns?

It's not too bad if you use the gear score to try to weed things out, but now that you can improve things, you might find the combo you want on a low gear score item and scrap it before you realize it was what you needed. The first time I quit playing this game was a combination of inventory overload and a lack of classified drops. With the latter contributing to the former. Having been playing again for about a week, I still haven't tackled any major inventory management, Haven't even opened the stash at all.

I seem to remember one particular point of contention was weapon mods. I wish there was a way to compare a bunch of mods or gear pieces at the same time, like in a table, with the relevant "mark as junk" options and so forth.

You can always mark loot as junk and sell all junk at once at most vendors. But I'll admit that even that sorting process can take some time.
