Game is Terrible: No Shield, Completely Ignores Greek Warfare

I can’t even discribe in words how disappointed I am in this game because of the ignorance and/or carelessness of the development team for ignoring the importance of shields and phalanxes in hoplite warfare. I started playing the game and realized there was nothing remotely characteristic of ancient Spartan or Greek warfare in the gameplay. I was so eager and interested to see how Ubisoft would incorporate the Greek style of warfare into the game. If it is going to continue to be just a mass of individual fighting without phalanxes or the use of shields, then I want my money back. What a fraud and a waste. Why did they set the game in this time period if they were just going to recklessly and carelessly ignore the historical details that truly would have made this game unique? I’m sorry, “fluidness” is not an excuse for completely ignoring historical context, as that is the primary reason why we play Assassin’s Creed. I can’t play this nonsense anymore knowing I’m constantly going to be disappointed by the lack of effort by Ubisoft to try to immerse players into a story of the time. Ugh, total waste of money.

Shields as an optional equipable pls. They're already implemented in game, you can add one or two new abilities to go along with this too, more customisation options, and more ways to get money out of us if included with any of the gear packs. Shields are a must.
Also fast travel for towns and cities instead of just sync/view points, origins had this as well.
Oh, and can it be changed so we can sell or dismantle the bonus gear from the gold or ultimate editions? It takes up space unnecessarily in my inventory, and it's mildly annoying.

The ancient atmosphere of classical Greece can be ruined if more important things are missing like Mt. Olympus, Colossus of Rhodes etc. Rhodes is not even on the map, like Cyprus and other important ancient Greek locations. IF Ubisoft wants to make History in making Video Games, they should make a Hellenistic game with all the colonies of ancient Greece, all the way from Emporion, Spain to Hydaspes, India. The map of Odyssey only shows a tiny bit of ancient Greece, not even the whole map of modern Greece. There is so much more to explore.... Again, IF Ubisoft is interested in being a pioneer game dev.

    - Horrible Texture-quality!
    - The whole HUD Customization is a bad joke.
    - Why the f is the Adrenaline Bar hidden when you disable the Ability Icons? Thats ********! It should be connected to the HP-Bar ._.
    - The HUD needs to be scalable/moveable.
    - The Romance like out of a bad Comedy, its even worse than Mass Effect.
    - Cloth-Physics and some other things are locked 30FPS which looks HORRILBE!
    - Fire-Effects look super pixalated even with everything maxed out!

Apologies for the lengthy post but I have A LOT to say about this game after having played it for the last 3 days.

I haven’t finished it, obviously, but I’m going to come out and say it: Odyssey is the best Assassin's Creed game since Brotherhood even if, technically, it’s not an Assassin’s Creed game. These are my first impressions so they’re subject to change but…wow. I don’t even know where to begin because I’m just blown away by how good this it is.

    POSITIVES:

    The story:

    • This is the best story Ubisoft has created in a while in ANY of their games, not just an Assassin’s Creed one. I’m actually quite shocked because Ubisoft has been making it sound like storytelling is becoming less and less of a priority… However, this has to be the most narrative-driven game they’ve made in quite some time. I’m level 19 and have just reached Athens
      Spoiler:  Show
after the first confrontation with Alexios (which had me on the edge of my seat).

At its core Odyssey is just about an abandoned orphan who wants to reconnect with her family and there’s something so poignant about that. It’s also a conspiracy drama and for that the pacing is perfect. It’s a slow burn that demands your attention - mysteries are unravelled layer by layer. Twists are clever and earned. It’s easy to follow and yet there's more beneath the surface. All of the characters are memorable. I could go on…

I knew the story was going to be great from the opening tutorial on Kefalonia. The way it so seamlessly uses the narrative context to provide gameplay information is very well done.

      Spoiler:  Show
Additionally, the writers build up the Cyclops as this intimidating force but it’s done subtly. The game doesn’t put a big red target on his back from the word go just to have the player work their way up to him by doing tedious side activities. Instead, it has him interfere with Kassandra’s daily life, threatening her second family to the point that she eventually has to take him out by the end. The game prioritises her personal agendas and sets him up as a nuisance that’s just constantly getting in the way so that, to the player, his death becomes inevitable. In other words, they show us how the Cyclops is a threat by literally making him a problem for both Kassandra and the player. They don’t tell us he’s a threat and then have us work our way to defeat him off the bat.

They also totally sell Kefalonia as this pathetic, dead-end place to the point that you can see why Kassandra wants to leave it. When you do eventually get ready to leave the island with the music swelling in background as you say your goodbyes to all the characters you realise, like Kassandra, you’re actually going to miss this place and the characters. I’m nostalgic for Kefalonia already.

And then it gets even better with the reveal at the end of episode 1. I didn’t see that coming at all.

IMO the story isn’t good as it is because of the choice mechanic. Rather, the choice mechanic is a welcome addition because the story is so great. Of course the player has to be the one to shape it otherwise we’re going to be yelling at the screen a lot – yeah, it’s that type of family drama. I suspect there is going to be a lot of discussion regarding the story in the spoilers forum, if not already.

There’s also some nice presentation here. For instance, I really liked the cinematic way it cut to Layla digging up rocks and then using the animus to explain all the gameplay settings (something Origins never cared to do). It’s still not entirely plausible given how the animus is supposed to work but I appreciate the inventiveness.

    The world:

    • I can’t figure it out! Usually, it’s easy to work out the world structure but I feel like with Odyssey I’m constantly discovering new things every time I think I have it sussed. I can’t see the “pattern” emerging just yet so as a result it doesn’t feel repetitive or fatiguing. It does an excellent job of hiding its puppet strings which means you have to actively go out into the world and experiment to see what activities will uncover clues. For instance, unmasking the cultists can be achieved in various ways it seems but I’m not entirely sure how. Some seem to be uncovered through side quests but just killing some cultists will immediately reveal others? Either way, I think the Cult of Kosmos is my favourite system just because of how it relates to the story and the mystery around it. It also has the added bonus of unlocking spear upgrades.

Every fort, bandit camp, military base is begging to be explored because rewards are so plentiful and valuable. I never feel like my time is being wasted or that I’ve walked away empty handed. You are constantly killing two or even three or four birds with one stone. Even if you don’t want to partake in the siege battles after having done everything to lower the nation at least you’ve got some cool loot and recruited some lieutenants along the way.

In Origins you would infiltrate a fort scoping the area with Senu, setting a trap on the braziers, planning each and every one of your assassinations carefully…only to realise you wasted your time because most of the main and side quests were going to send you there anyway and now you have to do that all over again...In Odyssey there’s a little bit of that but the difference is when that happens the game doesn’t tend to generate as many enemies as there was before and there is always a captain-like NPC who you can recruit to your ship or is at least carrying valuable loot. Additionally, depending on how far you are in the story and side quests, some of these forts have quest items that can be found and looted before the quest has been initiated. So, if you already have the quest item before speaking to the quest giver for the first time Kassandra will tell the NPC that she already has the item. Stuff like that makes the world feel more real and also saves the player time.

It’s strange, Senu was a vital asset in Origins but in Odyssey I find myself forgetting to use Ikoras and I think it’s because the game doesn’t force him on you. Also, there’s something about this world that compels you to explore it on foot and it’s not just the fact that you can loot stuff on the ground. Again, it's difficult to explain.
    • ‘Exploration mode’ is a nice touch. I believe you have to ask extra questions to get the clues? I never not ask those extra questions so I wonder how someone would find the areas without doing so… Also, I’ve noticed that if you’ve already discovered the area the final info in the clues log will outright tell you where it is which shows attention to detail.

    Gameplay:

    • The quest structure is pretty much the same – go here and kill this or steal this but they’re framed in a really interesting story with memorable and funny characters that you just to see what happens next.
    • I’m usually a stealth person but the Warrior skill tree is so good that I’ve become completely combat-focused. I’ve never been a fan of skill trees – I see them as a necessary evil to get strong enough to do certain quests. Whereas in Odyssey every time I get an ability point I cannot wait to assign them and test them out my new skills.

It took me a while to see the point of the Hunter abilities but after investing more into it I’m enjoying it. The rain of arrows is great for stealth situations where characters are bunched together because it breaks them up as they run around hiding, or it simply takes them all out in one hit if upgraded enough. And then there’s the warrior bow type skill that allows you to shoot multiple arrows which is great on animals. However, my favourite ability above all is probably the poison damage from the Assassin skill tree and the bull rush one from Warrior because combined they make a lethal combo.
    • The base combat is much more refined, not perfect (more on that later) but much tighter and cleaner. Lock-on is more intuitive; I use it most of the time whereas in Origins I avoided it like the plague. Getting rid of the shields was an excellent decision that the devs should not walk back on because now you are forced to actually parry and dodge at the right time. It exposes you but also encourages you to take risks. It never gets old to do a perfect dodge so that time slows down. Feels so satisfying. Again, combat isn’t perfect but wow when it works it REALLY works.
    • The loot system in Origins was great for its simplicity, here it’s deeper and more rewarding but has still maintained that simplicity. In Origins, items outlived their usefulness rather quickly but in Odyssey you really need to think about what you’re throwing away. Even if you find a legendary item, if it doesn’t suit your play style then it’s not very helpful so finding that special loot that enhances your abilities becomes all the more valuable. Again, its deep but not needlessly complicated like a lot of RPGs. I also think it’s great that you can craft arrows so that you don’t have to keep running back to the shop to buy them but a cynical part of me thinks its just a way of slowing down upgrade progress for the ship (wood is the biggest resource requirement for the Adrestia).
    • I enjoy the mercenary system because it’s also very simple: uncover a mercenary, view their strengths and weaknesses, defeat the mercenary, take their place, move up the tier ladder… but then apparently there’s an arena? And killing some mercenaries provides “Active abilities” or something like that? Like I said, there are so many systems at play here that you’re always discovering something new and always being rewarded. I still haven’t mastered all of it.

If you do anything illegal like killing civilians, stealing and getting caught, your bounty goes up and those mercenaries will come after you. Therefore, if you can’t be bothered to travel the world to find them you can actually just draw them out by being despicable, with the chances of the mercenary you need to rise up the ranks approaching you increasing with each bounty level. I also like how you can pay it off or just kill the sponsor. It’s a brilliant upgrade to the bounty system in AC II with a dash of Shadow of Mordor thrown in to make it interesting.

    • I haven’t done much naval traversal yet because that’s whole other ball game and I’m just trying to navigate the land-based stuff. What I will say is that from the little I’ve done I’ve enjoyed and it makes me nostalgic for Black Flag. I enjoy the Phantom Pain-like recruitment. Every time you slay a high-levelled enemy it’s a missed opportunity so part of the challenge is figuring out how to apprehend them without killing. Usually the Spartan kick will do the trick but you can use one of the abilities in the Hunter tree to do the job if you want a shortcut.
    • Ship upgrading is basically a deeper version of Black Flag. Like Black Flag, the tricky thing here is that a lot of the upgrades require the same resources. Wood is easy to come by but so much of its used across various upgrades that you have to make tough decisions about where to apply it. I also love that much of the resources you need for your ship can be obtained on land so you don’t necessarily need to grind off-shore just to get levelled up. You can be a badass of the sea before you’ve ever set sail.
    • I like how boarding a ship and killing everyone on it regains ship health and how cleaving a ship in two – which is tough to pull of - rewards you with more resources. I also love how when you defeat a ship sometimes the camera zooms in on the enemies falling back in slow motion. Looks so cinematic and badass.

      Aesthetics:
    • The world is stunning and vast. The colour palette is gorgeous and the graphics really compliment it. I think these graphics just about edge out Unity. Some excellent anti-aliasing. Facial models are the best in the series – just compare Layla’s model to Origins and you’ll see what I mean. I like how the loot colours correspond to common, rare, epic and legendary so you can make a choice as to whether you can be bothered to take it or not. The weird highlighter effect on lootable objects is far tamer. They’ve even toned it down for contextual situations like environmental hiding. The music is absolutely beautiful as well but there’s still not enough of it. Still, it’s more frequent than Origins, definitely will be buying the soundtrack.

      NEGATIVES:
    • By far and away my biggest negative, and it’s going to sound so silly because it’s easily fixable, is the loading when pulling up the menu screen. It’s getting to the point where I’m not managing my inventory as much because I’m dreading waiting through the loading screen to do it and in a game like this where you’re constantly managing your loot, lieutenants, discoveries and story info that is a problem. They need to fix that ASAP.
    • For all the devs’ talk about “choice” it’s very understated. Maybe it’s because I’ve made the right decisions? There have been no direct repercussions of the choices I have made YET. All of them appear unseen and I can’t see how my decisions have affected anything. In the Witcher 3, you always knew when something happened as a direct result of your actions whether good or bad even though when you were making the choices at the time you didn’t know how it could turn out.

Some of the choices aren’t really choices. I’ll give you an example:

Option 1: Give some money to the beggar. (50 Drachmas)
    Option 2: Not a chance.

    (Chooses option 2): QUEST FAILED.

Um, what? The quest has been completed. I simply chose to tell the beggar to take a hike. What’s the point of making choices if you’re just going to say it’s the wrong one???

    • Sometimes what Kassandra says doesn’t match what the dialogue wheel says. Example:

“Greatness is as greatness does” was the advice that I gave to poor Odysseya who wanted to follow in the footsteps of the Greek legend of her namesake but somehow Kassandra said it really brashly and followed it up with an insult about how Odysseya has done nothing…that was NOT what I wanted to say. I reloaded.
    • Also, I think some of the choices are bugged…
      Spoiler:  Show
I didn’t kill Nikolas but for some reason the game thinks I did? Everyone keeps telling me I killed him and Kassandra is agreeing with them and I’m like ‘um, what?’ I let him go to live with his remorse.
Either this is a bug or it’s a very, very bad continuity error. I might do a separate thread on this to ask.
    • The romances are cringe-worthy! I’ve rejected all of them apart from the one with the randy old lady and that’s because I needed the trophy and she made me laugh so I thought it would be funny. For a game that has such good pacing in its main narrative the romances are way too… forward. There’s no foreplay (no pun intended). The Kyra one they showed at E3 is probably as good as it gets but its not reflective of most of the romances in this game and it seems almost difficult to fail them… There’s no chase so all the fun is taken out of it.
    • Sometimes loot from enemies you’ve slain disappears before you can take it…
    • It takes too long to activate abilities. There’s a delay bug so it’s not as responsive as it could be. Same with dodging.
    • Climbing is hit and miss, getting caught on a lot of mountains.
    • Horse calling isn’t as responsive especially when I’m trying to get away.
    • Not enough music. Either it’s for technical reason or they don’t want to pay the composers more money. A shame really because it’s brilliant.
    • Crew members sing in Greek so non Greeks like myself can’t understand what they’re saying about your odyssey. Also, you can’t really hear their singing; it’s too low in the mix.
    • I miss wall hugging. I don’t see why they can’t add it in.
    • I’m not a fan of the siege battles; they go on for too long and get really messy. I don’t use lock on in them, which is not a good sign.
    • Civilian AI deliberately running in the middle of combat so that you accidently hit them causing your bounty to rise. It’s really transparent. Don’t force me, game. If I want to be a sociopath and start killing innocents then I will.
    • Like Origins, no point in fighting a soldier on the road because the game will just infinitely spawn a bunch of guards on horseback until you’re forced to run away.
    • Modern day continues its rapid decline into obscurity. Yes, it’s better than Origins SO FAR and despite the small room Layla is in I like the mood and atmosphere of the location. But my goodness, do the devs not give a damn! Sifting through emails and the occasional dialogue wheel (which are really just glorified info dumps) is NOT gameplay, it’s poorly laid out exposition. Also, where are Shaun, Rebecca and William?

      Spoiler:  Show
    • Holy crap, the voice acting for Alexios is bad. It’s so unequal in tone that it almost sounds like a spoof. However, the interaction between him and Kassandra was so edge of your seat gripping that I forgave it. But yeah, I couldn’t imagine listening to that for 100 hours.

  8. Torch throwing isn’t as far as Origins so you have to be really close to do it which is risky.
  9. No ‘completed quest’ log? Why?
  10. Finally, it has to be said: Odyssey is not an Assassin’s Creed game. I’ve made my peace with that and have accepted the devs aren’t interested in making a true AC game anymore but as long as the title remains I will continue to list it as a negative. I think newcomers will be very confused…

  11. Anyway, most of my negatives are nitpicks or technical hiccups that I trust will be ironed out. Odyssey is definitely my Game of the Year so far and well done to Quebec for making yet another fun and addictive instalment.

    My only cons:
    - Re-used animations on almost every weapon type. I find that the sword seems to have less...maybe because you also have the little spearhead with you.
    - The attack chains for all the weapons except for the sword (in my opinion) get old kinda fast.
    - I wish we could throw weapons but oh well.

I mainly use the sword and the little spearhead that's used with it. I love how brutal the combat is along with the skills, stealth and gameplay mechanics that have made the combat way more fun for me than other titles in the series. I just wish there were more fighting animations and more ways to string attacks together. I've never been in a fight in the game so far and not had a smile on my face because of how fun it's been though.

Oh, and the assassinations now are more brutal, entertaining and noisier than they've been. I'm the type of player to go in stealth but if **** hits the fan, I'm ready to fight...so I don't care much for stealth being a bit weirder this time around. I've enjoyed it all a lot and the tools we get for silent kills and stealth are a lot more expansive than they have been in previous titles.

I'm impressed. The game could be more fine tuned with animations, mouths syncing with lines, etc. but all in all I've been having a blast and when I exit the game and come on here, I can't think of much that I am not a fan of.

Oh, ship battles can be a bit overwhelming. That's definitely a thing.

Not very far into the game, just wanted to give early feedback, since there are some things that are taking away from my enjoyment, otherwise the world is really beautiful and immersive, great job!

    1. Shields

Why not give the player the option to use a shield? I am very disappointed, since in Origins there were shields and shield are an important part of historical Greek warfare, like pointed out in this very thread before. Enemies do have and use shields, why can we not do the same? It is a "choice" after all, to use a shield or not, and would not deteriorate the game in any meaningful way.

    2. Enemy Scaling

Another step back from Origins. Why make it mandatory? I hate to have almost zero sense of progression, quests, enemies and basically the whole world around me levels with me, it eliminates any real worth in numbers and destroys the whole "RPG" aspect that was so heavily emphasized beforehand. Why not give the players, again, as an option, as a "choice", the possibility to turn this off like in Origins? So that level borders for regions actually have real meaning again, so that I feel I have become stronger and accomplished something in the time I spent with the game? So that I can deliberately choose to overlevel or spend some time grinding, to overcome a strong enemy or difficult quest? I was extremely disappointed to discover that the first bounty hunter after my head was suddenly the same level as me when I was trying to overlevel him by one or two levels... the game is no fun for me if it feels like TES IV: Oblivion. A rat could oneshot you in this game.

    3. Atmospherical and "ridiculous" details

Origins was an amazing game for it's love in the small, little details that make the world and the surroundings feel alive. Odyssey has a lot of this going for it, too, but there are some small things I miss that were, again, already done in Origins, so I can only wonder why they are absent from this next game? Some examples:

    - Water did discolor stones and other materials in Origins, like in most ports you could see different tones of color for the stones used in building harbors, according to how much of them was submerged in water, where the water did reach, etc.

    - Wet effects for characters and environment when it's raining and when you were swimming. Could be this is in the game already, but it's very minor compared to Origins. Also, I miss the water on deck from Black Flag when you sail through heavy waves or in a storm!

    - Character(s) becoming dirty when walking through dust, sand, vegetation. I get it, we are not in the desert, but it was so authentic to see our armor and clothing become dirtier with time!

    Hey There ,
Yes the game launched for me Last Monday which means it the 5th day for it and 4 days playing this game as i didn't get the chance to play on Monday ..
My initial impression about the game is,, well it's good i guess i'm currently about 20% of the Game .. but i have so many issues and feedback to say and i hope Ubisoft and assassins creed team collect them and make a patch ASAP because this game need some water to live if you know what i mean ..

What I like is everything especially the world and yes i tested the spear but i prefer more the hidden blade .. the cons for this game is , first i play on Normal PS4 with A TV 1080 Which means No HDR nothing to imrove the experience unfortunately ..
in short Assassins creed Origins looks WAY Better and feel newer than Assassins Creed Odyssey, I didn't like the 3rd view cam it feels like the witcher 3 ,, Alexios seems far I want it to be Like AC origins which he's like almost close to the screen , and running animation so bad not like any assassin i know from assassins creed games, just go and see bayek running animation and see this .. running animation it's important for assassins creed game , heck even see Jacob and Evie on AC syndicate .. lip syncing is super, super bad i'm sorry if you want compression ! i don't know i can bring AC2 on Ps3 or AC1 that have far better lip syncing because even the main characters when they talk their lips mostly closed .. The RPG in this game way strong and stronger than AC Origins and i don't like it , add to that the enemy level scale same as you .. Shields .. dialog choices which i wish wasn't in the game but i hope it stays here and never ever come back to the next Assassins creed .. Texture needs improvements and especially the frame rate FPS sometimes messy on my Poor PS4 .. when Alexios swim and get out his outfit don't get wet like in Origins which is so weird, Game meant to be a Warrior and less stealth and assassin .. I can go on and on but there's a lot of people who is expertise i see in this forum who listed everything i want to say by details so please ubisoft read everything and every feedback possible and patch the game .. I like this game but also i want the improvements in patches like in origins , i have close 200 hours in origins and i can simply notice the difference , it doesn't feel Like a new game and it performs bad comparing to origins , so i have hopes with serious huge and many patches i hope at least to reach to the level of AC Origins in terms of graphics , texture , FPS , the 3rd cam view ( i don't know how to explain it ) make it like Origins , lip syncing and animations in running and talking ..
I own Ultimate edition on PS4 , I'm Huge fan of Assassins creed , I don't mean to SH** on the game but to work with you guys giving you feedback as much as possible to have better experience and make Odyssey reach the level of origins if not better in everything .. because what i feel like i'm playing on Pre-Alpha Verison or Alpha not the actual game , it needs more polishing i guess with some patches .. that's my early initial review at least , Make it look good for Normal PS4 owners guys .. Thank You
