Really "PDW" should refer specifically to weapon systems that fire cartridges that perform somewhere between that of a pistol and rifle.
These in the game would be Knight's PDW, P90, and MP7 with their, respectively, 6x35, 5.7x28, and 4.6x30 cartridges.
These rounds are designed from scratch to be shot from extremely short barrels but replicate rifle cartridge energy and penetration out to around 300 metres, then rapidly lose energy thereafter.
Pistol rounds are designed to fire at low velocity but enjoy greater stopping power via larger slugs. Rifle rounds are designed to enjoy high energy at long ranges using higher powder loads propelling smaller slugs. PDW rounds will pierce body armour and tumble in soft tissue like rifle rounds and will enjoy similar "effective" ranges but will have much lower "maximum" ranges and reduce the risk of collateral damage like pistol rounds.
A weapon that fires 5.56x45 or another intermediate rifle cartridge from a very short barrel or as a generally compact platform is really still an assault rifle, though of course "personal defence weapon" sounds like it could be anything tiny, and I've noticed that, for legal reasons, people in the US are very insistent about calling rifled weapons that fire rifle cartridges "pistols" as long as they lack buttstocks, and submachine guns that lack rifling will even be called "rifles" if they meet US legal definitions of "short barrelled rifle"---which apparently do not actually take into account rifling or ammo type---so there will always be some variant usage in terminology.
But I'd say the cartridge type and role will always be the defining factor.
I do not recall seeing anyone requesting the MG36, despite it being a fairly populair weapon all around, so yes, that's why it's not up thereOriginally Posted by RedCeII Go to original post

Probably the last topic for weapon suggestions as I don't want to spam the entire forum with them.
Of those on the list, I would have to go with the UMP, Honey Badger, RPK-74, and IWI Negev.
While I have nothing against the M60E6 and M240B, I feel the game has enough MGs in the "7.62" range and the 240, as awesome as it is, is just too ****ing heavy for what Nomad and his team is up to. Pity the MG4 (basically, the MG5/"MG121"'s little brother in 5.56) isn't there.
