So apparently the physics engine allows this :

I haven't played the other games enough to know if this used to happen in them too, but it kinda freaked me out when it happened to me.

Yea, it would happen in fusion aswell, if you landed too hard but didn't die. It would sometimes go back to normal after successfully landing another jump or two.
