When in controller mode, when you try to pause the game, it doesn't. ( You have to hit it several times first, and then it will pause normally by just pressing once the button or hit ESC in the keyboard and then, everything will work normally )

I can confirm, that it works completely fine with keyboard and using ESC at any point in the race, does pause the game.

You can't pause while the countdown is displaying, in controller mode.
