Hey folks. I've been considering where I should buy Cliffs of Dover from. In Canada my options are:

    1) Amazon.ca - $47.99 CDN
    2) Steam - $49.99 USD (currently $48.12 in Canadian currency)

So price is pretty much identical. The question is if I should get the boxed version or not. I like to have the box and physical media but I'm wondering if there are drawbacks to going this route. Especially given the Steam integration.

Should there be larger pay for addon packs later, they will, I would guess, be sold on Steam and probably not given boxed releases. So would it be better to go Steam whole hog?

    I'm just not sure yet.

Or you can get it from Just flight and have it now, instead of waiting until 19th.

Been thinking about getting the steam serial key from just flight as others have mentioned, if you want to fly now in the US. Isn't it odd that it is cheaper than the pre-order on steam at $44.99 compared to $49.99? And also the price in euros is $44.99, so no loss on the exchange rate, quite interesting.

From what I hear with the boxed version, correct me if I'm wrong.. Is you get the case with the CD in it. I hear the very skimpy manual comes in PDF format on the CD. So you don't really get anything extra with the box version but maybe you like to display your game collection on a bookshelf or something, I guess having the box will look nice for that.

As far as updating the game and getting add-ons, I would also think that most of them will just be steam based or online based and not in a hard format.

Also, with the game needing (and hopefully getting) so many updates and fixes, it is very very unlikely that you will ever install it off the CD again besides now. Imagine installing CloD to a new system off the CD in a couple years after almost all the files have been changed and updated. You are going to install a few gigs from the CD and then its going to authenticate on Steam and redownload all the updated files which will probably be just as many gigs if not more. Why do it twice when you probably have the same amount of download content if you where to just redownload the whole thing off of steam the next time.

So yeah, if you want the physical box for nostalgia and decorating your bookshelf get that, but after a few months the disc is going to become outdated and useless and you will probably just be re-downloading the whole thing off steam anways.

If you get it through steam the highest percentage of your dollars should reach Maddox Games. Certainly much more than the boxed version. It's the best way of showing support.

Get it from wherever is cheapest or whatever is most convenient in terms of having to wait for something to be delivered versus downloading it right away.

Getting the disc will mean the install will be a lot faster. Downloading a big game from Steam is usually around 2 hours or so for me, and I have pretty fast internet. Once you get it installed on your computer, it will operate through Steam either way. You'll get patches automatically downloaded and installed either way. You'll start the game on Steam either way. If you ever have to reinstall the game though, if you had a disc it would again mean a quicker install.

I have something like 60 games on Steam (most of them cost $1 to $5 mind you) so I have a fair bit of experience with it. Steam is great and often have crazy sales like games selling for $5 that are $40 anywhere else, but often when a game first comes out and places like Amazon or Best Buy do sales, Steam will charge the full price.

I recently bought Shogun 2 as a digital download from Amazon, it was $40 compared to Steam's $50 release price. I downloaded it from Steam and once it got installed it runs on Steam like any game I have bought on Steam. Should be the same with COD.

Wait for another year and it will be in the bargain bin for $5. it is really that bad.

It might well be in the bargain box a year from now. Almost every game is. However if the Devs keep working on it I'm positive there will be a big improvement in it by then.

That being said, I'd like to be the first to predict the new, all-improved version of CloD that will be announced as a stand alone title within the next two years. I'd also like to predict the storm of old guard whining by those who feel cheated for having to pay again for what they feel they should have got the first time, even if it does have the MTO added to it...

i couldn't figure that either,5 dollars cheaper, took less then 2 hours to dl,i've never had a problem with steam,i would highly recommend justflight to anyone who doesn't want to wait, game plays ok for me,haven't been flying il2 for couple years, its like learning how to fly/shoot again.sure the game needs some work, its not much worst then when il2-fb came out, took a couple hours tweaking, setting axis and such, but have enjoyed flying.
my system is average, phenom quad, ati 5570,4 g ram,win7.was expecting much worst, after reading so many posts, but was pleasently surprised, getting 50-60 over the channel,30-50 over coast of france, with 6 allies and 8-12 bombers, still tweaking it,i expect it will improve, and with a patch or two,we should be well on our way to a great sim.this of course is just my opinon, cheers.

Thanks for the feedback folks! Very good point RE: getting the most amount of money back to Oleg and his team. The guy deserves it.
