I have a question for you: What does the AR in the rifles name, AR-15, stand for?Originally Posted by OdinXcore Go to original post
Another one: Why is the rifle designed to be so ergonomic?
Heres a quote for you: "Definition of assault rifle: any of various intermediate-range, magazine-fed military rifles (such as the AK-47) that can be set for automatic or semiautomatic fire; also : a rifle that resembles a military assault rifle but is designed to allow only semiautomatic fire."
To answer your first question, the "AR" in AR-15 stands for ArmaLight Rifle after the original 1959 manufacturer, ArmaLight. Colt bought the design and trademark for the AR-15. After the patent expired in 1977 it basically became a free-for-all on who could manufacture it and the name "AR-15" just stuck. This also explains why the AR-15 is so modular.Originally Posted by MKp4nnus Go to original post
This also kind of answers the second question as well, it's a rifle that's been developed and refined for 59 years. For example, the M16 is the US military's adaptation of the AR-15. Subsequently the M4 is also a variant of the M16.
This image probably shows best why the rifle is so ergonomic:

Rather then saying "it was designed to be ergonomic", it would be more accurate to say that it was "modified and improved to be more ergonomic".
