Flying to a mission in ghost mode, game errored out. Once restarted, save file gone. Asking me to make a new character...

Do you still have the game saves in your Local files? By default the Saves are located here:
- C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher\savegames\<account_id> \1771
If so what you can try is disabling the Cloud Saves through the Uplay settings menu and then see if you can load up the old save.
also disable the " in-game overlay" since i've disabled it as was suggested by other people here the save game bug didn't re occurred till now at least

Unfortunately in that case the save may be gone and not retrievable.

I'm sorry to see that this happened, corruption in game files can occur. I'd advise making a copy of local saved games to possibly prevent this issue occurring in the future. People who lose their toons to asinine bugs in ghost mode should be compensated. This is absolutely reprehensible.
And the cookie cutter answers from ubisoft support are really getting out of control. Is it a bot answering that crap?
