Everything You'll Need! To Be SAFE Before Playing Ghost Mode

    Hello everyone,

It's been 3 weeks since the launch of Ghost Mode, and thousands of players have tried out this new mode, where death is supposed to be permanent and the consequences are deletion of your save file. Thousands of players have come forward with complaints of how game glitches or poor game design caused their character to die, and there have been discussions about whether this game is even built to support permadeath.

The fact is, the game isn't built to support permadeath, because there are too many illegitimate ways to get KIA, falling through the map, helicopter pilot disconnecting, enemy spawns at fast travel "safe"houses etc. to name a few.

So what can players do when the missions and campaign progression isn't the challenge of this mode, but working around bugs/glitches and disconnects is. The entire idea of this gamemode, as a few people have pointed out so many times on the forums, is based on permadeath and that is the mistake the developers made. So what if you take permadeath out of the picture? Well clearly a lot of people have requested Ubisoft to do just that. But that may or may not happen, as part of the September update.

Are you going to try Ghost Mode and put hours and hours into your character only to be KIA by a glitch and waste all that time? Are you going to wait for September so that the developers may 'possibly' remove permadeath from Ghost Mode so you don't have to fear glitches anymore? Are you going to keep losing characters illegitimately and do nothing but feel frustrated about it? No, no, no!

Take things into your own hands! There is no such thing as permadeath in Ghost Mode. How, you may ask? Backups of save files!

Step 1: Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher\savegames\[id]\ and copy paste this folder someplace else to make a backup. Inside this folder are subfolders for all of your Uplay games, so if you want to narrow down your backup, go into this folder and find a subfolder called 3559 (or 1771 if not purchased via Steam), which is the Uplay code for Ghost Recon Wildlands, and only copy paste that.

C:\ is the standard hard drive partition for most people, where programs are installed, but this may be different for you, depending on where your Operating System is installed.

MikeWeeks has posted here, that the code for Ghost Recon Wildlands, i.e. the name of the subfolder where its save files are located, will be 3559 if the game was purchased on Steam and 1771 if the game was purchased on Uplay. If either of these subfolders are not present, the method to narrow down which subfolder this game corresponds to is easy. While playing the game, the active save files in these subfolders update constantly, so if you Alt-Tab out of the game to one of these folders, check which subfolder has a file (or two) with a Date/Time Modified the same as your current Computer Time (or 1-2 minutes ago). In other words, the subfolder with the file(s) that have been modified (updated) in the last few minutes while you're playing the game, is the subfolder for that particular game.

If you need further help with this, please feel free to add me on Uplay; the name is the same as you see here.

This backup can be made as frequently as you like. You can choose to back up this folder every hour, after every mission or after every minute if you want.

Step 2: Go to Uplay. Open Settings, and under General, uncheck the first option that says "Enable cloud save synchronization for supported games".

Step 3: If you fall through the map in Ghost Mode, or have enemies spawn out of thin air and execute you and your team, or are playing solo without AI, and spawn a helicopter and it spawns on top of you and KIA's you instantly, or are a victim of any of the hundreds of KIA-causing glitches, simply laugh at the "Your soldier has died" screen, Alt-F4, go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher\savegames\[id]\ and delete the folder here (the one that you backed up elsewhere), copy the backup back here, and relaunch the game. You never KIA'd, you're still alive!

For PS4 players, the guide to save files is at https://www.playstation.com/en-gb/ge...playstation-4/ Thank you to Kean_1 for sharing this link.

As per the latest research by Xbox One players, the method to restore a lost Ghost Mode character and relevant discussion, on the console is at https://www.reddit.com/r/GhostRecon/...ffline_if_you/ but according to Paladinrja, this method is risky and players who attempt this may lose their entire save. In Paladinrja's words: "Warning: Do this exactly right or you will lose everything you've ever done in this game! This is not a backup but an exploit". The details of this risk are in Paladinrja's reply (Post #52 on Page 6 of this thread), and should definitely be read before attempting this method.

Post #106 on Page 11 of this thread, by DrUNkenj4Gs, is a confirmation that the method for restoring lost characters on Ghost Mode, for Xbox One, is working. Please refer to this reply for details.

Congratulations, you've defeated permadeath! Why did you have to do so? Because the game design is simply not capable to distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate KIA's.

If you use this backup method as an exploit to cheat permadeath every time you die, simply because you're not skilled enough, then shame on you! If you got to Tier 01 by restoring backed up save files a dozen times, each time after dying legitimately because you're just not competent enough, then shame on you! If you have no skill and abuse this method to get to Tier 01 just to get the Prestige Points rewards for each Tier, so you can get lots of shiny things you already own from Prestige Crates, and have cheated the micro-transaction economy to an extent, then shame on you, you criminal! But because of this, we can't not have this method available for use by honest, decent players who lose their characters to glitches every day and simply don't want their time wasted.

There it is, ladies and gentlemen. That's all you need before you play Ghost Mode. Your life-saver, your time-saver, your protection against game glitches, and teamkillers.

Yes, teamkillers! Think that doesn't happen often? Think again. That is what Ghost Mode public is going to end up being, if it hasn't already become just that. Teamkilling and griefing sprees to satisfy the lust for Open-World PVP in Ghost Recon Wildlands is the bonus feature of Ghost Mode co-op, or didn't you know? Well your backups will save you against the trolls too!

Quick method of protection against spawnkilling trolls, without having to worry about backups. When you join Ghost Mode public matchmaking, and are teamkilled by a troll, who is leaving you to bleed out, instantly disconnect your internet. If you're on a laptop, use the Airplane Mode button. If you're on a computer, simply disconnect your active internet connection, or switch off your router. The game will instantly put you in Solo, your AI teammates will spawn right next to you and revive you immediately.

Thank you for reading. I welcome any kind of feedback and questions.

Currently Tier 01 on Ghost Mode. I've fallen through the map 4 times, had enemy spawns at a "safe"house coming out of the cutscene mow me and my AI team down once, had a helicopter spawn next to me and spontaneously explode, KIA'ing me, as I had AI deactivated, and have been teamkilled a number of times and left to bleed out.

Try again, Ubisoft. You're not taking my Tier 01 away from me.

Oh and I'm sure you're aware of this, please give me access to the amazing reward of Ghost Mode that I worked so hard for: the Exosuit with all the paintjobs, that is never sure whether to stay locked or unlocked. I'm at 115% completion and obviously Tier 01, and the suit is still locked. I'd love to look shiny in my forever alive backed up Tier 01 Ghost Mode character.

As the gentlemen from Ubisoft in the video at the end of El Sueno in Ghost Mode say, I have amazing skills. Yes, I know. I can Alt-F4 very fast out of a glitchy situation. I have fail-safes for glitches and know many workarounds for game glitches. And I can never die. Permadeath? What permadeath?

You should add save procedures for PS4 and XB1.

Although I don't play GM I think this will be very helpful for those who do. Thumbs up!

It's made a huge difference for me. The whole PD requirement still suck IMO but at least it's now tolerable as my friends and I are not losing all of our progress. It's bad enough losing the 2-3 levels we do now but that's nothing compared to having to start over. I just make sure to upload my save(s) after each session or when significant progress is made. Still inconvenient but leaps and bounds better.

Kean_1, I'm sorry I don't know how saving works on consoles. But if someone has the step-by-step instructions for consoles, I and the community would really appreciate it if they could post them here, so we can all get to Tier 01 on Ghost Mode with honesty, decency and with zero acknowledgement for the existence of permadeath.

Portions of Posmertnyy's thread should actually be an Ubisoft sticky. I wonder sometimes why there isn't a Ghost Mode sub-forum.

I know a guy that had his character nerf'd in normal campaign from tier03 to tier27 for redoing a mission catagorized as glitched out.. not naming names or missions (something I do not support doing) If someone can be punished for replaying a mission to self benefit without using a hack. I'm unclear how Ubisoft has the nerve to not have a fail-safe strategy posted for falling through the map and essentially getting a suicide in Ghost Mode. What that tells me is.. that they can access and can manipulate accounts and or revert to an older cloud save file. Because your local files wouldn't hold on to something that old. So if that is possible, why can't Ubisoft own up and reinstate a charcter who died via glitch? They clearly told me "They can't do that yet"
I don't think that is exactly accurate.

A post like Posmernyy's is probably not well received by Ubisoft. I do think it is accurate and easy to understand.

I have seen many people lose their characters to something uncontrollable.I even tell my experienced friends to play Solo till tier and we will co-op to help after that. We have a friend that is about tier 50, so I will post a video on how to grind to tier01 legit, safe, fast, efficient and all co-op so you can benefit from lower tier experienced players in group.

Perhaps you can simply add a link to the website. Here's the instructions for the PS4 Online Storage:

    https://www.playstation.com/en-gb/ge...playstation-4/

The trick with Ghost Mode is to manually save after each session or significant advancement of your character (e.g. after retrieving a hard to get weapon, skill points, bonus medal(s), etc.).

Sorry, don't know much about the XB1 situation or even saving on the thumb drives and all that (never bothered on my system) but hopefully some folks can help with that.

Good thread to help others make Ghost Mode a more tolerable experience in its current form.
