    Why bother playing now?

After coming back to the game I tried to get into it with a new character only to get slapped down by chars with purple and gold gear. Im getting 3 shotted in 1v1. Pointless to try and level now until the new expansion comes out and everyone is playing the brand new shiny classes

Purple and gold gear isn’t even that much effort to get. 2-3 reps for purple, 3-7 to gold from memory. Maybe it’s because you are trying a new character after not playing for a while you just aren’t skilled anymore and need time to learn your character and the game mechanics.

Its a valid complaint, better players who know their characters also getting a significant buff over a newbie has always been counter intuitive- alot of friends never got into it because of this (bought the game, put the game down). The effect in game could be debated, however the feeling like your up against it in an unfair way can't, even if a better player beats the newbie in the back of their mind they are screaming 'gear score'

That said you can always play brawls/duels to lvl up.

I've always thought that the default (i.e) unslotted gear should carry a generic gear score of 50, with the slight buff to all stats, no dump stats gear there. If you want to change the ascetic you opt out of your gear score, or if you want a particular thing (i.e. straight damage with no chip) then you can swap it out once you get that item yourself at a level you are happy with

just play the gear really doesn't matter much plus they are killing the gear soon anyway.
