So turning my fury away from the joke that Ghost Wa....I mean Drone Wars has become, I decided to go ahead and give Ghost Mode a chance.
Technically it isn’t very different than how I already played, no hud, etc. etc.
I’m not perfect I made a mistake or two causing my own death and a forced restart....but upon completing the Yuri and Pulito segment I was amazed to see that some things aren’t necessarily designed to be “pro-player” oriented.
I got caught in a massive faction war between rebels and Santa Blanca; out of nowhere Unidad shows up...and magically I am shot in the back by Unidad forces...OK; I died, **** happens....move forward.
I rebuild my character; I see that the Yuri and Pulito phase is completed and I decide to go on to the next mission again....but wait; I still lost EVERYTHING?
I understand ANYTHING I obtained prior to completing the next mission should be taken...but why EVERYTHING I obtained / earned during my successful completion of the previous mission?
It is ridiculous to think that I should have to go back and recover the skill points, gun cases, medals and achievements that were obtained in the SUCCESSFUL completion of a previous portion of the game....in doing so, you NEVER have a legitimate chance at advancing through the game.
I am all for the “One Life” objectivity...you screw up, you die, it’s over...and I agree anything you obtained in a phase or mission area where you died prior to successfully completing that mission you should lose....but seriously; everything?
Why even bother trying to collect the skill points, and all the other trinkets? Just follow the missions and ignore the ancillary goals...
It’s excessive to remove what you won in the successful mission completion...
But... that's the idea of permadeath. You die - you lose all your progress. If you keep the things you found, then we're not really dealing with permadeath any more, but with a VERY complicated and time consuming "create-new-character-to-load-your-save" system.
However, I do agree that there should be some kind of "reward" (for lack of a better term) for dying in Ghost Mode. One of the suggestions I really liked (don't recall the author now) is that we should get prestige points and the further we got, the more points we'd get. That would give you the incentive to start over.
You got it.Originally Posted by ReconDoc83 Go to original post
Not to sound like an Ubi microtransaction salesperson. Again. But one way to mitigate some of the annoyance is to buy a weapon and accessory pack or two in the store so that you always start with the gear you prefer. More immersive that way as well since it makes more sense for elite operators to have their chosen gear before they even set foot in country instead of having to root through SB's rubbish to find dat ANPEQ15 you need to make your rifle look highspeed.
If you are fundamentally opposed to microtransactions, no worries, not trying to push it on anyone, but from my perspective it was a small price to pay to be sure I always start a new game in both vanilla and Ghost mode and in the two main story DLCs with my SCAR, G28, and FiveseveN.
One thing we've made sure to pass to the team is that players would like some of these Ghost Mode features to be separate from permadeath gameplay. I've also seen people mention a limited lives system instead of one-life permadeath.
This is the first time I've personally seen the idea of retaining progress between lives or some sort of progression system that persists through all Ghost Mode runs. Would you guys be interested in this?
Hell, yes!Originally Posted by UbiInsulin Go to original post
This is basically a standard in roguelike games these days (Dead Cells, Rogue Legacy and many other), where permadeath means the end of a character, but some bonuses that characyer has earned are shared with all the future charaters created, making the game easier and more user-friendly with time.
Having a similar system here would fit in perfectly. Maybe by having a separate skill tree shared by all Ghost Mode characters, where you'd be able to increase your weapon damage, penetration, bullet resistance and so on.
I would as it would certainly take some of the sting out of a glitch-death, trolling TK from randoms, etc. Better than losing everything. .....but I would rather just see these new features as options in the main game or at least permadeath made an option in Ghost Mode.Originally Posted by UbiInsulin Go to original post
When creating a character in GM, maybe PD can be an option that is selected at that time and then is set for the life of that character? Maybe make the exo suit or some other special reward only obtainable to those who commit to that feature? I have no idea what would be easier but those of us who wanted the other features but not PD (I suspect) would likely be happier and PD fans would still have their mode and bragging rights with the prize.
In all honesty, I would have been happy if those features had just been options in the main campaign as most had really requested them to be.
Thanks again for your help on this Insulin (and the other Community reps).
I was thinking of Rogue Legacy too.Originally Posted by Ringwraith5 Go to original postHad a fun time with that game.
I suppose it'd be logical that missions remain accomplished while character progression is lost.Originally Posted by UbiInsulin Go to original post
So Yuri and Polito, once killed in a Ghost mode saveslot, are defeated for good until that saveslot is deleted.
But if you die then that specific soldier has fallen along with whatever they have learned or collected, and another must rise to take their place.
