I was talking with a friend about gaming a couple days ago. She told me about telling one of her nephews (who is 14 years old) that I have played a lot of computer games. She mentioned the Far Cry series since I talk about it whenever gaming comes up. Her nephew quickly stated he has played all of the Far Cry releases including Far Cry 5. So she asked him which one he likes best and he replied Far Cry 2. So she asked why and he stated, "Because it's the most realistic."
For me the point is that even a young gamer is able to see the difference between FC2 and everything that has been released since then. And that gives me hope...not a lot granted...but a glimmer at least. I want more of the experience FC2 creates. It is unique, a portion of the community knows what I'm referring to and we would like to see the company go back and explore the possibilities to make it available once again while at the same time providing everyone who doesn't appreciate it, the ability to play the game as they do today.
Some people enjoy FPS games where the emphasis is on simulating reality instead of just offering an arcade game with pretty graphics and lots of truly meaningless distractions. If I wanted that I can start up my copy of Pac-Man or Galaga or Donkey Kong among hundreds of other classic arcade games. FC2 is a blend of FPS and tactical combat with a harsh and stoic treatment in terms of user controls and environment. It has issues as any game usually has. But they could all be addressed in a sequel that makes FC2 even better. Sadly that did not happen.
So your point is that FC2 is better than FC5?
I think you're going to find a lot of people disagree with that. FC2 was too repetitive and formulaic. Not to mention riddled with many annoyances. As far as I'm aware it's generally considered the worst in the series and not something most mature gamers would want to revive.
No. My point is Far Cry 2 had something unique that has not appeared in any subsequent release. The bugs, or "annoyances" as you put them are all things that...as I mentioned, can be fixed or improved. Bugs are incidental and have no intent behind them. I have no way of knowing what your sources are that state FC2 is considered the worst of the series. There are a lot of people here and on many other forums who enjoyed what FC2 accomplished. There are also a lot of people who don't like FC2 because it's not an easy game to play, or takes too long, or has bugs, or has features they don't like (gun jams, spawning enemies and malaria are popular complaints). I've been debating the qualities of FC2 for many years. I have participated in a Far Cry focus group hosted by Ubisoft prior to the release of FC5. I've also been playing computer games since the 1970's and have well over a thousand games from the past 40 odd years. I think I'm what you might call a "mature" gamer.Originally Posted by d.rich99 Go to original post
Most people are not all that passionate about gaming. Most people are just looking for instant gratification. In short, they are the bulk of the audience and are simply looking for distracting entertainment. That's who Ubisoft is focused on pleasing. People like me are the niche group. I understand all that. But it doesn't change the fact that FC has become an arcade game with pretty graphics that can be cloned over and over. It is yet another "AAA" game franchise that delivers the same old same old wrapped in a new set of clothes with each release.
Seems to me that because the title of your thread being what it is and this being the FC5 forum, that people thought you were referring to hope for the world of FC5, not the franchise over all. I don't think anyone has any trouble recognizing that FC2 if very different from the subsequent releases, can't think of a time anyone has suggested otherwise. It didn't seem to me that d.rich99 was referring to bugs when he said annoyances, I thought he was talking about some of the poor design choices in FC2, of which there were plenty that I'd consider 'annoyances' even though I did enjoy the game overall, shortcomings & all, just like I've enjoyed the releases that followed, though they've also not been without their faults.
I thought the designs in FC3 addressed a lot of the bigger issues that plagued FC2, but they lost some things that made that game great in the process. To me I think striking a balance betwixt the 2 designs could result in a 'best of both worlds' sort of game that has the potential to be stronger than the 2 individual designs. I'd wager I'm just about as passionate as anyone about gaming & specifically Far Cry for that matter, but I know you & I don't see eye to eye on a lot of things, so passion really isn't the issue so far as I can tell.

Hey HorTys...nice to see you after so long. I have been busy. I'm going to college again (at 63) to learn the skills for yet another career in this crazy world. This is my sixth college I have attended in my lifetime.
I keep chipping away at the Far Cry debate. I cannot disagree with what you are pointing out. But that doesn't negate what I say either. We are enjoying a happy standoff of sorts. Check out some of my other posts of late. Maybe I'm saying something useful that the Ubisoft team will find interesting.
Wow man, well thats great that you're taking the plunge to learn what you need to even at the latter stages! Good luck in your pursuit on that front!Originally Posted by scrapser Go to original post
I'm glad to see you around again, I've always enjoyed our discussions because unlike some of the other members you seem to realize I'm not just trying to disagree with you for the sake of it & say that you're wrong but trying to learn from your perspective and understand your point of view. While we've certainly come to an impasse on some aspects I like to think we've remained respectful, something I've found other users incapable of at times, haha....
I don't think I've seen everything you've spoken on recently but I've not been as active here for a while either, so I'm sure I'll get around to the rest of your posts. I saw the one talking about skills or whatever, I see we're still not on the same page there, haha...
