WARNING: THIS IS A LONG *** POST, AND ENGLISH IS NOT MY NATIVE LANGUAGE.
I have a confession to make, i have at the moment of writing this post, 807 hours of solo play, and i’m deeply ashamed of it. I’m so ashamed of this, that despite having several friends who are avid gamers, i have never played a single second with them, and in fact, have made serious efforts to never recommend this video game to them.
This game as made me come to the realization that i’m a deeply masochist person, for no one should spend this amount of time in something that causes so much frustration, rage and self disgust, as i have spent. Yet, i have also found that i’m somewhat of a naive and optimistic dreamer, because that’s what i find myself doing a lot when playing this game. I keep wondering the what if’s and could have been. But even someone as “foolish” as me, as a breaking point, and for me it was this latest “update”. So here is my “review”. For all that it’s worth…
I won't bother talking about the story, characters and plot, since the that's been covered to death by the “professionals”, i will instead focus on the things that, i have noticed after several playthroughs, like for example, the landscape created in this game, can still, after the aforementioned 800 plus hours, blow my breath away. It’s sheer scope, and diversity is amazing, yet it’s never really taken advantage, and only by going out of my way, and creating my on “rules”. There is no advantage giving to a player to go out off it’s way and move through the cover of the amazing forest, because there is no penalty for blasting through a city center, armed to the teeth and dressed like some airsofter going to a convention center. Not to mention that getting in a firefight in those forest with “a.i” that can see through them like they don’t exist is suicide. In fact the player is far more “rewarded” for “cheesing” as much as he can. But what about immersion, what about rewarding the player who tries to take advantage of that amazing “world” that some poor soul created? No can do. You see, there’s this very special player, whose needs must take precedence above all else. The Casual. Yep, that ever elusive Mr. casual that everyone is always trying to please. Even if, in the process, the players that actually create, nurture and sustain that game and it’s community, get the short end of the stick, and they better not make to many waves, for that shall bring the wrath of the Great Defenders of the poor and oppressed Mr. and Ms. Casual. So, like i did when i was young, i stand in that sandbox, and “play” pretend. Then there’s the buggy, faulty and weirdly unpolished mess that it still is, and i’m not just talking about the times that a mission breaks, a npc bugs out or you fall through the world or worst, in to a “pothole” that you should be able to vault over, but for some reason it can’t. I’m talking about the fact that the P12(a day one weapon), still as a buggy interrogation animation, the weapon literally doesn’t fit in the characters hand. Or the fact that for some reason that i cannot fathom the characters movement gets slower when it’s in conflict.. Really? I would think that being under fire would be a good motivator to move quickly, but for some reason this so called “ghost’s”, soiled their pants and do this weird goose step when in conflict. Then there there’s the fact that recoil in this world doesn't affect the weapon, it affect the reticle, yeah, it’s the reticle that bounces not the muzzle!(now try and unsee that). And speaking of reticle, what’s up with this game and crap reticles? Most aren’t bright enough while other are way to bright, than you have the fact that the reticles in the exps&g33 are switched, the unzoomed one as the three ranging dots while the zoomed one as a cqc reticle. The pistol iron sights. Oh boy… 90% are so “thicc” that they should have instagram accounts. The “compensators”, i mean, i could probably go on a tirade on this topic alone, but why bother, so i will just ask, why not simply put a time to equip “penalty”, and let every muzzle device equip a suppressor?it’s not like i can’t just “pause” the game, by going to the inventory a change it there. It’s not like you took the care to see if the “thing” you put on this game and called a compensator, is in fact a compensator, a flash hider or if it is even threaded. The weapons and gear are all over the place, some don’t have some of the accessories for some random reason, the stats are a coin toss on the effects, for some reason a Gosh Darn “triple laser” is better than a AN/PEQ. And i vaguely remember that in some QA, someone from the dev team said that the reason we can’t mix and match the weapon “skins” is because all skins were curated by a “specialist” or some such, and they should reflect the theme, but somehow a lime green and fluorescent orange cheetah pattern fits! The bullet speed is a joke. Look its funny once in a while to make a shot a 100m and it feeling like it was actually 1km, but it gets old really quick. Most of the time i feel like i’m in some strange and bizarre cross over with splatoon © ® ™ and i’m training to use a squirt gun. The enemy as time to dodge, weave and make a cup of tea in the time it takes a suppressed 5.56 round to reach him. What objects are bulletproof is also a mystery, the side panel of an armored SUV?No. A metal fence tube? Yes, even from a .50 cal. The fact that for some reason, the ghost have a really fancy drone and various gadgets, but somehow a wirecuter is not in the budget. You have to take a chain link fence out with high explosives.(Maybe it's inside one of those fancy lootbox... hrm, i mean BATTLECRATES!!! )
The fact, that for some reason far cry 5 helicopters have AA counter measures where there exists no such threats, but in this game, where AA missile batteries are more common than aa batteries, nope! But you will learn how it feels to pilot a washing machine with wings in the form of any plane, and helicopters that can perform 180 on a dime but have rotor blades made of paper mache, wich by the way is the same material used for chassis of all vehicles, but somehow they still function after you fall from the highest peak, have suspensions that are mortaly resentful, that they are not allowed their life long dream of being marshmallows, and were big chunky off road tires are perfect for drifting, because screw friction, this is 2018 i can be whatever i want! So what do you do with this mess? You make an entire DLC out of it of course! Do you in the time passed, try and salvage that mess? Of course not. You just ignore it until people forget.
The “a.i”... I don’t know if i should feel glad or completely mortified, that a company that’s responsible for the “a.i” in this game (and all of ubis games), actually is trying to create real A.I. AKA SAM. It’s incredible, this things are either on or off. The enemy a.i is dumb as a rock and completely oblivious, until you're in conflict , then it as the ability to pinpoint your location and to make headshots from 50m away while dual wielding MAC-10’s(i really don't want to known who taught, that, that should be the weapons of choice for those very “special” sicarios, i bet they also like to secretly use those TRIPLE lasers to operate will they operate!).Then you have the “friendly” a.i’s, again, it’s on or off. Your companions either sit idly by while some enemy walks right behind you while your scoping or you turn them on, by telling them to fire, and sit back and admire as they, F off and bring righteous fury and lead poisoning to any poor soul that crosses their path. Could there have been a better method to give more precise order and commands to them, like the ability to set Rules Of Engagement, hold fire, only return fire and weapons free, and them set the formation and distance that they should use… No Mr. Casual would be very upset, by such meaningless and confusing things. And to all of this you now bring the amazing tier -1337, oh boy, oh boy, my masochist self can barely contain itself, by the amount of sheer frustration and loathing i fell even by just writing about it. Ubis take on upping the difficulty on this game is brilliant. Let's make the player die just by the enemy mentioning bullets, because, there’s nothing better than enemies with “wallhacks” that can one shot you from the other side of the map through two cinder block walls. Hmmm, the joy!I mean, actually making the a.i notice your noise or making camouflage actually matter, etc would not please Mr. Casual. And the grind, that sweet, sweet grind, it’s almost and there is some reason for the descent through the tiers gets really BOOSTED (wink wink nudge nudge). I mean, you can get to level 30, without ever doing any main mission. Just by collecting the bits and bobs around the map, and the occasional mayhem and slaughter that is bound to happen when ghosts are out and about. Yet to reach tier 1, you have to complete the game , and repeat many of those missions ad nauseum, (with the Inca Camina and Media Luna, which are locked behind “special edition”).OH, and remember the exps&g33 reticle thing, its back.. Because the grand reward for tier 1, no tier 5, the tier 1 reward is a grey skin..hmm,, the reward for tier 5 is a super duper rifle, that you can’t customize and as this sight on it. Yep, how fantastic!
And now i come down on the reason for this long *** post.. The Special Operation 2.
I have another confession to make… i bought the year 2 season pass. Yep, i’m one of those chumps! But clearly my intellect is not the best, i have after all, 800 plus hours in this thing.
Apparently, it was sheer stupidity and ignorance on my part, to expect a season pass to offer content for an entire season, which is rather strange since ubi practically invented the concept of the season pass, as perhaps in a strange twist of irony, one can observe the value of a real season pass in the game which this operation crosses over with, Rainbow 6 Siege. Also quite the ironic twist that the constant reminder of Siege doesn’t really alleviate most of my misgiving with the combat, weapon design and customization in this game. Perhaps instead of raiding skell tech, they should raid the armory instead or perhaps the weapons designers and advisors, since they clearly have a better idea of what actually works and what doesn’t! And to add insult to injury, the whole thing is a even more of a buggy mess, it’s messing with save games and for some reason no prestige is being awarded where it clearly says it should be. Hmm, how much you want to bet, that this “bug” will only get fixed, AFTER, those seven early access days, that the “season” pass “gives” are over.
In summation: If i’m allow the hyperbole, it’s almost tragic what as been done to this game, while i don't think that it could ever have been a “true” sim game, it could have been something perhaps even more special, it could have been an introduction to that type of genre, it could have a game that took advantage of the endless possibilities of the milsim genre and bring a more playful “arcady” feeling to it, it could have taken the Tom Clancy name, and perhaps insert a little more of the “ghost” thing, hell even the whole turn rogue from the division, would have made more sense than that PvP thing that was made. Every person could have a “mercenary” mode or something and could invade other people's games and have a cat and mouse game within a certain area of the map, and than bounties and rep could exist. I don’t known i’m clearly not as smart people who do this for a living, but anything would have been more original than a 4v4 with classes, it's just a third person, more wonky version of Siege. What a waste.
I’m sorry to anyone who read this whole thing, but i just felt that even if it's stupid and self centered, that there may be some meaning to saying this.
Edit: It somehow escaped me the first time to mention the lack of a dedicated button to switch what type of drone you want to use, i almost never use the thing because its annoying to always have to go to the menu, and the fact, that you call real reloading what is in fact some weird type of combat/speed reload, and if you want to see how that mechanic is well implemented i suggest Escape from Tarkov. Hint it involves the mystical use of something called tap and double tap of a key.
TLDR: A Shame. I’m out!!
