    TD: Timeline or Continuity?

Curious for the story telling of TD, where or when does TD2 set compared to TD? Same time period years earlier or later? Or is it more like FF where it ends up being the same story told a different way, over and over?

TD2 is months after the events TD. I believe it is something like 6 or more after TD ended with the story.

TD2 should start with your TD1 character dying horribly....

Just about. The Division 2 is set seven months after the events of The Division, but you are playing a different Agent. There's some setting context here as well as some insight on your character here if you missed it.
