I never played the beta, but word is they improved the handling a lot since the beta. I play on KB/M and I feel the handling is fine. It's not super arcade and it's not SIM, it's somewhere in between the two more toward arcade. You need to let off gas in turns, and use handbrake on hairpins. If you've played any racing games you should be able to pick it up.
Yeah. Flight 'speed' is still wtf'ish; but you now have control options and vehicles handle generally better overall (can't even imagine what beta musta been like, lol!). I've been playing since the game officially released (Steel book edition called "Standard") and it's a lot better now. -- However, captured Landrocks from convoys are veritable missiles! Literally as fast as the Lambi's (if not possibly faster).
The choppers now have 2 flight models, old and new.
With the new one, you get a crosshair if you have guns or missiles onboard, with the old you don't. They both fly differently as well.
I find it easier to stay below 20 metres with the new one, to avoid SAM missiles but it is easier to avoid the actual missiles with the old flightmodel.
You can switch between the two in Options.
With the new flight model, you can also steer with the mouse and aim. It was a bit too sensitive for me but I could turn that down in Options as well, without it affecting the rest of the game so that is very good. Helicopter mouse sensitivity does not affect normal soldier aiming in other words.
I haven't had issues with car driving, it feels good enough. I just wish they were faster.
I'm not sure the road vehicle handling has changed that much at all since the beta, but that could just be my perception. Good video link, Frag, the guy there even says in the video he's not sure himself if there were changes or he got used to the ways vehicles drive. That could be the case with me too.
@Teddy_NYC, if the driving put you off in the beta, then it will probably still be an issue, but you do get used to it and there's way more to the game than driving
I personally felt no change in the vehicle handling/controls from the betas vs. the release version at least on PS4. .....with the exception of the motorcycles. IMO, the cycles got worse either during the open beta (compared to the closed beta) or upon release. It may just be me but I thought they handled better back then.
The APC is atrocious and has a delayed response to input making it one of the more difficult vehicles in the game to control for me.
Having said that, the vehicle controls, physics and damage modeling in GRW are not anywhere near the level of say a game like GTAV or Battlefield. Maybe it's because they also seem to lack a sense of weight or heft. To be honest, this is an area I always thought Ubi struggled with whether in their games I've played like their Far Cry series and Watch Dogs.
The planes takes off and land within a matter of a few feet and they have no rudder control once they take to the air (like other games do which can help when landing; arguments aside about real life use).
The original helos had decent physics in the sense that they translated weight rather well as you controlled the aircraft especially in transitions / momentum. However, the actual controls were terrible IMO when you're used to basic FCs represented in other games and real life. Ubi tends to blend controls together for some reason and again, this just isn't in GRW (you can see just how bad it is in FC5).
The new helo controls were a response to the extensive complaints they received regarding those original, awkward controls. While the new ones gave the player essentially a standard layout, the physics were horrible. The weightiness was gone as were the physics of the original. To this day I still have a feeling they used the existing drone controls and physics to create the new helo option with perhaps a couple tweaks. Luckily, they kept the old controls/physics for those that want them but unfortunately, those users don't get all the other new additions that come with the revision.
Having said that, I found none of the controls so bad that I wasn't able to master them. It's easy enough. However, I wouldn't call them that enjoyable or fun like I would in other games like GTAV or BF like I mentioned. .....good enough? ....sure. GRW is more about the gunplay and squad tactics after all.
I thought I'd read some say the vehicle handling on gamepad is difficult, but I might be mistaking it with another game. The armored SUV drives like a geriatric put put. It sputters constantly and has slow response every time you accelerate, especially up grades. I can only guess they intentionally made it that way as compensation for it having very tough armor. I've said often before that I really wish they'd have made the turret Landrock available as a drop vehicle. They're a lot faster and handle better. They're not quite as tough, but tough enough considering they're faster and easier to evade Armored SUV pursuits with.
The worst thing about the armored SUV is early in the game if you're playing on a high difficulty level, you'll need a tough land vehicle to tag the more advanced convoys, and you can't fast travel near them because they're always moving. This means it can take some time to drive to them in the slow as molasses Armored SUV. A good compromise though is working on getting Spotting upgraded, and fast travel to safe houses that have helis until you get the heli unlocked as a drop vehicle. That way you can land the heli in a high spot about a mile ahead of the convoy, spot it, and then after scanning the cargo vehicle with the drone, you can tag the driver for a sync shot. The rest is easy.
Glad I am not the only one who reached the same conclusion about the helicopters seeming like drones with the new flight controls! I have stuck with the new flight control option as you get the precision (and crosshair) that was missing from the original control scheme. That said - and as you have already pointed out - the original controls did have a good feel of weight which you don't get with the new scheme.Originally Posted by Kean_1 Go to original post
The car/bike handling I personally think is alright. It's not amazing, but it's not terrible either.
