    Description:
The small (fictional) town of Lewisbury, Montana is your typical quiet small town, carved into surrounding mountains and hills over 130 years ago. However, the construction of a large oil pipeline originating from Canada began development through the heart of the town and continuous civil unrest has thrown the town into turmoil.

    Quick map overview video:

Black Gold is a map I originally sketched out just prior to the launch of Far Cry 5, however I didn't get around to publishing the first version about a month after launch, mainly due to excessive procrastination. This map is my second ever map published in the Far Cry series, the other being a simple Outpost map in Far Cry 4. Far Cry's map editor has always intrigued me, being what is known as a "forger" in the 'Forge' mode in Halo myself, which is, simply put, an advanced object manipulation tool for multiplayer in the Halo series.

Moving on, while the overall layout in Black Gold's original sketch remains the same, it underwent major revisions during creation. Nearing its overall layout being completed, I began optimizing the map with gameplay in mind by adding various line-of-sight blockers (such as the scattered debris and vehicles on the map), preventing players from exploiting positions that would give them a major advantage (examples: fence above the body shop, barbed wire above the gas pump roofs, etc.), and modifying the environment to encourage players to take particular routes.

Recently its come to my attention that (as of this post) Black Gold reached the number 5th highest rated multiplayer map on PC, which has prompted me to begin promoting the map more. I hope everybody enjoys the map as much as I had building it. Hopefully one day the map can be considered to be featured by Ubisoft. If any employees at Ubisoft have any concerns with the map (such as with gameplay for any reason) prior to featuring it, please contact me and I can make tweaks to it if need be.

    Thanks, everyone!

Nice work. I love building original maps but try to think of a map outside hope county. i would love to see people try to build there house and neighborhood im trying to right now ive got my house and garage if you have time give it a go with generic shapes you can really get it close. Its really fun running around your house and fighting pvp and usually works well for map design.

Hey, thanks! Indeed, I put extra time into adding and paying attention to the little details, it's just been my thing. :P

Thank you, but not entirely sure what you mean by this. As I stated in my footnotes of the OP, this was my first published map in Far Cry 5 and I began initial sketches and drafts on it prior to the game even launching. I've used the generic shapes a bit heavy in some areas of the map, including the maintenance corridor towards the North side of the map, and other places as well, like the cemetery's walls. If I used more to create the buildings within the map's boundaries from scratch, I'd run out of budget in no time. I'm aware with creating themes and settings for a map and for awhile, even before I've created a sketch for this map, I've wanted to capture a Midwestern scene involving a controversial and (potentially) violent idea, such as the construction of an oil pipeline and the setting for Far Cry 5's campaign in Montana was perfect to carry over into this map.

The next idea I've been brainstorming for awhile will likely be a Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon themed Outpost (or Garrison, as it were) map, which will likely be generic shape-heavy as we don't have too many Blood Dragon assets to work with in the editor.

    Black Gold - version 3

First of all, thank you Ubisoft for featuring Black Gold! It's great to know the various developers have played on and like my map!

Black Gold updated to version 3!
Was version 2 as of time of original post.

    Version 3 update log:
    • Map limit boundary updated slightly
    • Knocked down a fence on Western side of the diner to allow for better player traffic flow
    • Roadblock & fences along map limits near the diner updated
    • Various details added within playable boundaries (new asphalt decals, debris, license plates on vehicles)
    • Re-added window flowerpot to house that was mistakenly deleted at some point
    • Additional detail to mountain terrain outside playable boundaries (better erosion, texture adjustments)
    • Cell phone tower added outside playable boundaries

The purpose of this update is mainly to add a slightly better level of detail and realism to the map and fixes relatively small issues. This is likely the final update for this map. This update does not change any major portions of the map and should have a minuscule impact on gameplay.

I'm still learning the editor tools but I think it would be cool if 5 star map artists would work with themes, like make part 1 of your house then make map part 2-10 different parts of your neighborhood or areas in the theme. Like I made a series of Vietnam Maps before I knew all of the editor tools called Dark Lotus Vietnam 1-3 so now when we get the Hours of Darkness AI I plan to make a 10 part Vietnam Flashback movie. Like map 1 start on a USA Army Base under attack by Vietnamese Helicopters. Then say map 2 your breaking out of a POW camp, Map 3 flashback to Vietnam 200 man cave fight and so on.

It would be cool to make a giant shopping mall when the zombie AI dlc gets released, like make a 5 part map detailing every section of your favorite shopping mall so each map is like passing a level in whatever developer theme you can make different than the original Far Cry 5.

Also it would be cool if a team of the best map makers built a theme and created 10 maps as levels 1-10 in that themes Far Cry mini game.

I love that featured Cowboy west map you move from one end of town to the other on feature, it's very short but it reminds me of the old 80's cowboy shooters, if 10 pro's got together they could easily make a Far Cry Western in 20 maps so it would take you over an hour to get through the developer theme mini game.

My best maps are 3 stars lol when it gets to 4.3 that's what I'd do just make mini games in parts.

There seems to be favor towards you and others. This map i played and its just no original feel to it. While i think you have nice scenery in the river there is no theme its just city. It looks like you made the toys map if im correct that is original this map black gold no it should not be a feature i see so many good maps and its not to knock on yours its just boring nothing makes it signature. When i make a map i think what are game developers not making i have a tron map and a walmart map and also a stargate map and many im working on that you will never see in a game. I seen a tower of babel map thats awsome. Think out side the box and Ubisoft look for some of the people who spend all there time creating new experiences because that is what far cry is all about finding that most unique map that you will never see anywhere else. But thats just healthy criticism to help you in future maps. All props to people who make maps it takes time.

And just because your map gets played alot does not make it good no offense there is a problem in map rotation that needs to be fixed. I have a map played 14000 times ubisoft headquarters on ps4 and there is a glitch on it that causes ps4 to crash the game. Then i have a maps way better and only 100-200. They get put into the cycle once they are published then taken out so many plays later.

What? This map is clearly not based off of a city, and is based around a fictional, unincorporated rural mountain town. And secondly, even if it were a city, a city is a theme, is it not? What you just said makes no sense.

What are you talking about? No, I didn't make "Toys Room DM" if that's the map you're talking about. I'm not sure at all how you assumed I made that map. Black Gold is the only map I've published in Far Cry 5. Please research your points better before attempting to give constructive feedback.

Black Gold has a theme and is entirely original, I'm really not sure why you keep throwing this thought around. Just because it doesn't have a science-fiction theme, based off of a supermarket or based off of something else in literature does not mean it's not an original map. I'm really not sure how you articulated this thought.

This map, Black Gold, is based in a fictional, unincorporated rural mountain town in Montana (not Hope County if you're going to fixate on that), centered around a fictional fight around a controversial oil pipeline being constructed through the region. Not only is that the map's overall theme, but there are clear sub-settings of the map which include the highway overpass and the construction work near the center of the map. By no means am I inflating my own ego here but I clearly set a theme and setting for this map, which unfortunately for yourself, you were unable to piece together.

Again, just because this map isn't science-fiction themed or based off of some piece of literature or movie, does not mean it's not a new experience. This map has a unique layout and has a unique setting and theme that you fail to see, but it is a new experience. Not only is a map supposed to be centered around a theme and setting, which Black Gold is, but has to take into account for gameplay. Do you perhaps any constructive criticism regarding the gameplay of the map?

Look, I'm an experienced map maker in other games, namely Halo with its "Forge" mode. By no means is this professional or career-based work but for years I've listened to and read many pieces of constructive criticism from others to effectively improve my work and skills as a map designer but, I'm sorry, your feedback is unhelpful because none of the thoughts you have communicated to me actually make any sense whatsoever.

"No offense" to you but just because you disliked the map does not mean it doesn't have its own distinctive theme and setting and does not mean that it "shouldn't have been featured" because the map wasn't what you wanted it to be. We are all unique and have our own particular tastes and my particular style of map design clearly isn't for you. Expressing that a map "shouldn't have been featured" is under no circumstances, "healthy criticism" as you put it.

Thank you for your thoughts but they don't effectively improve my skills as a map designer because they make absolutely no sense or are otherwise unhelpful and I apologize for that.

Healthy criticism the layout for me was annoying no good angles to shoot.
Good river and mountains needs to be a oil spill or oil leak somewhere or original building you can go into or emblem on side to convey your story more. unless i missed it. The other team seemed to lock my team in the whole time it seemed like i wasn't getting anywhere. I guess i just dont feel immersed in it. Sorry only an opinion. I am sure every map you make after will be better and better.

I also am very frustrated with this game and people you see people play Minecraft and build loads of cool stuff but on this game everyone goes predictable mountain rural city theme. And lots of creative maps get 100 plays and they are 4star the same as feature and never get played after that there needs to be a rotation to get more 3 and 4 star maps played and stop milking the same map over and over that is not what far cry arcade is about. This isn't your fault but ubisoft needs to correct the map rotation.

Yes map rotation is a huge problem ubisoft even lobbies wont help that only Ubisoft can rotate the maps so we can play all that is to offer.

Sorry got your name and javva name confused. They dont even give you credit for it says ubisoft creater so thats confusing.
