Just curious who made you the authority on what constitutes pirate fantasy? I see a lot of differing opinions on the subject, but I'm not here demanding everyone conform to only mine like you do.

Alright folks can we keep the conversation civil rather than attacking each other. If you can't discuss a topic without it getting heated then you shouldn't be discussing it here at all.

Respect each others opinions, stop insulting each other with back-handed quips and just have a healthy discussion about the game.

Equally understand that some people may never agree with your opinion, so constantly forcing that opinion upon them isn't going to change their mind.

pirate fantasy is also about action-adventure/exploration AND naval combat...not ONLY naval combat...(and also hand to hand combat btw like sword and gun fights)

You can't simply have manual boarding and leave both ships vulnerable to attacks for at least 3 minutes in an open world multiplayer game. That's a pretty long time for your ship to be sunk at least 4 times by another player. This is NOT a singleplayer game. Don't quote that Sea of Thieves does it because these two games are completely different than each other gameplay wise.
The same as with everything naval related the boarding could be also expanded and improved to fit this new game compared to, for example, boarding we had in AC:Black Flag where you could board in the middle of the big fight and every other ship around would just "wait" for you to finish your thing.

Boarding in this new game would be an option and very risky one but rewarding if successful. If you are solo and you happen to be lucky to find some other solo ship (or players) then you can board and take everything for yourself. Since Skull and Bones has obviously emphasis on multiplayer the boarding could adjust to that where other player will try to defend you while you board and raid the ship and then you can choose to split the prize or not in which case your allies might get angry and turn on you now....and things like that to make it way more interesthing and unpredictable then just sink the ship > done > move to the other and repeat the process.

The potential issue with forcing others to wait while the 2 ships fight is the possibility of waiting until everyone else leaves to avoid losing your loot. This can be countered to an extent with a boarding timer or something similar but then you have to figure what's an acceptable time to make others wait, 5 mins, 10, 20?. That could be alleviated by having the crews fight each other automatically regardless of what the PC controlled players are doing. Maybe have the player characters have a sword fight similar to the old Sid Meier's Pirates game while the crew count dwindles.

you can't stay on boarding forever...either the opposing crew will kill you or YOU kill the other crew

A potential issue yes if left in basic shape as my rough suggestion but things could be worked out if the gameplay is panned and made carefully to avoid this type of things.
First and foremost it makes no sense that boarding last for like 20min. I would not go with a timer but rather with gameplay which would allow you more or less to last a certain amount of time depending on the ship type (or strength?)...as DeeK_KayE said it's all about kill or to be killed...act quickly or your boarding will fail so you can't just chill on board of other ship because your own crew might be decemated or boarding even completely fail to the point where you might start to defent yourself so that you don't get borded instead in the process and loose the ship and everything.

Second...the boarding might also be improved upon what we had in Black Flag where you had those small "missions" to complete so that you can take it down. It would not be so bad if there is that aspect too of doing certain tasks like taking down the flag, kill the captain, xx number of crew, etc. but maybe there could be more to it so that it doesn't get too repetitive. For example maybe ship "anti-boarding" customization or something like that which could bring new things to the table...

Third. If there are few of you and it happens that only one ship is left to board then why not offer an option where up to two ships can board at the same time. You might start on the one side and if your friend see you have it rough then he can close in on the other side and help you out...or maybe to just simply speed up things instead of people sitting and waiting for bording process to finish.

Can't think of anything additionally now right from my head but with more thinking around it i am sure you can find a lot of interesting ideas to make boarding great additional value to the game especially considering that it seems like we obviously will not get land exploration, juming in the water type of gameplay...at least not in near future unfortunatelly.
