    Is this required?

If you're referring to the Lone Star gear set bonuses and 4/6-piece talents, it's not necessary to have a certain amount of Electronics or Skill Power to unlock or buff anything.

Having said that, the amount of ELE/SP you actually choose to run with obviously depends entirely on the particular weapons, talents, and skills you intend to use in your build.

You didn't really provide any details or information to work with, so it's difficult to give you any other meaningful advice at this point. Maybe talk a bit more about what you're hoping to achieve?

I just don't understand why all the videos I've seen so far have 4k elec with SP rolled on pieces...why not EAD etc considering it's an LMG build? I'm missing something or need caffeine...

Again, it really just depends on the weapon talents you want to run with, since each talent requires a certain balance of Firearms, Stamina, and Electronics in your main stats.

If you want to do PVE content with the Ferocious talent for more Damage to Elites, for example, then you'll either need to have Ferocious in the weapon's free talent slot (which is impossible on exotics like Big Al) or you'll need at least 3832 points in all three main stats Firearms, Stamina, and Electronics to unlock it. (At GS256+)

This means you'll either have to roll one gear piece to Electronics or you'll have to use Electronics gear mods to balance the stats appropriately.

As for EAD vs SP, well... this sort of depends if you're mainly doing PVE or PVP activity. Enemy Armour Damage is basically useless against other players, mainly due to the PVP damage scaling that nerfs its effectiveness. So in that case you'd be better off going with Skill Power or Crit Chance/Damage instead to buff other aspects of your build for PVP.

For me this is about using cover skills with the LS gearset. Stronger mobile or smart cover = longer buffs to your damage/protection etc as it will be able to take more dmg or just last longer. But wo seeing the builds more closely its difficult to pin down. That build could just be a more balanced cfg for pve. Where optimum dmg is sacrificed for alittle better healing. But if you play in a group you dont really need the heal and a decent tac build would provide better cover/ anyway.

    EAD + DtE for pve.

    CHC + CHD for pvp.

For all builds that provide high dps.

@OP, I would imagine that players did that to unlock talents on their weapons. Been a long time since I have really used LS, so bare with me. You get tons of ammo and most of your damage comes from massive hits from almost unlimited ammo to targets out of cover. Generally you don't get any EAD or DTE, unless it is from the gear pieces unless you add it. You do get Beserker if you can get it to process. So some may find sacrificing DPS/Firearms to get talents unlocked.

Probably all of the above: Weapon talents and Smart Cover.

Myself, I use a combination of healing talents, pulse (which adds to my crit chance and damage, which adds to Self Preserved), and (wimpy) support station to keep myself up, so no Electronics. Also, I make sure to play LS in a group - it's more of a support thing than playing the hero.

If you're running a Big Al, Smart Cover is very useful for stablizing when your Bezerker talent procs and for hitting targets at a distance. If you don't have any Skill Power or Skill Haste then you're going to have that Smart Cover inactive a lot of the time. I use Smart Cover duration mods but it's still not quite enough for me.

Smart cover and mobile cover for 50% damage reduction + health on kill.
Due to damage reduction you can have low stamina
