    This explains a lot.

I restarted playing a few days ago and have essentially soloed the game (up to level 14).

The checkpointing is really helpful because it does sometimes take a couple of attempts to get past a particular fight.

Underground less so than the others, I'd say. Of the three, it's the only activity where you're not forced to queue up prior to playing. It's exactly like all the other missions in the game, in the sense that you can matchmake if you want to, but if you just want to jump right in, you can. Because of this, Underground I feel will have the most longevity as the playerbase continues to dwindle.

Survival can be a very fun experience, for sure. But I hesitate to recommend it because of this. I've often sat around waiting for a good five minutes or more for a Survival match to start, and when it did, less than half the server was full. Not as big of an issue if you're looking for PvE (though it's still kind of lame), but starting a PvP match on this whole huge world map with only a handful of people, half of which (or more) will likely die from the elements, NPCs, or will simply quit out for whatever reason, leaves you with an experience that's quite a bit less than optimal.
