ill try to keep this short and to the point. ive wanted for honor for a long time, went on sale so i bought it. took a couple days to try to really get into it and learn as much as i can.
in these past 2 days i have 12 hours in the game, 75% story, did both trials (after switching to controller halfway through cause mouse is just horrid). there were parts i was frustrated with, but assumed it was just my lack of knowledge of mechanics. started just throwing everyone off ledges in the story which didnt feel rewarding. then i decided to get a hero to try in the practice range to get a better feel.
then i just ended up here confused.
number 1: parry. i think my hours in dark souls is messing with my head because i dont understand what a parry is supposed to do, when to do it, or why it would ever be a good idea. from my playtime all i can figure is when you see an icon flash you hit R2. is that correct? and if so still then, why? you dont get a counter hit right? it just acts as a block as far as i can tell.
number2: dodging. this seems like its a gamble weather or not it works at all. sometimes it works how id expect, see an attack start up, i dodge, move out of the way and dont get hit. sometimes though i just berally move at all and get hit even when it doesent look like i do, or sometimes the enemy turns mid animation to hit me regardless. is it supposed to be a gamble last ditch effort? also. is there any i frames in rolling? if not then whats the point?
number 3: unblockable attacks/grabs. this ties in with dodging a bit, but sometimes i can just dodge these and get a chance to reposition or to hit back if im fast enough after dodging. other times it just hits me no matter what i do. especially the grabs. through blocks, rolls, dodges, what i think is a parry. its just so vague what actions are to counter what attacks to me.
finally number 5: stance/direction: this may be a case of just stupidly accurate ai cause ive only played solo but it seems some enemies no matter when i switch directions or what char im playing they always match my direction for every single attack without fail. am i supposed to attack then switch directions somehow or am i missing some mechanic?. im just completely lost on that front.
TLDR: im sure theres some more little things im missing but, both parry and dodging seem to be extremely inconsistent even on solo play. unblockable attacks seem op and useless to try to counter. and finally directional blocking/ stances dont seem to matter beyond blocking incoming attacks much if at all.
bonus confusion: im drawn toward peacekeeper or orochi due to the flow and tempo they bring to the game but every hero ive tried so far seem to suffer from the best tactic being (at least against ai/campain) to just spam attack and mix it up with unlocked to dash away for stamina regen. then if all else fails just throw everyone off a cliff as the combat can be like hitting a solid steel bat against a wall made entirely of unforgiving flubber.
anyway thanks for reading and i do love the direction of this game and style of play. im just feeling more and more like i havnt learned anything at all in my 12 hours of playtime, which would be a shame.
If you parry someone you get a counter. It depends on what you parry. In general if you parry a light attack you can throw a heavy after that parry and it will connect. If you parry a heavy attack you can throw a light attack and it will connect.Originally Posted by plinkage Go to original post

This is are the max punishes. OOS means "out of stamiina" so an oos parry means someone with a depleted green stamina bar trys to hit u but you parry it.
Guardbreaks "grabs" > dodges. If you dodge and someone guard breaks you hell get you. If you dodge some attacks to early they will track you. If you wanna dodge and attack you have to do it in the moment the enemy commited to it.Originally Posted by plinkage Go to original post
AI in this game reads your inputs. They just roll RNG if they allow you to hit them.Originally Posted by plinkage Go to original post
The most consistent way to beat AI (and the ONLY way to beat level 3 AI) is to wait for them to attack and just parry ----> punish them until they are dead.
Lower level AI is also notoriously bad at dealing with unblockables.
AI cant deal with stun most of the time allowing you to get a free grab or anything you want really.
thanks for the reply. i tried to go into arena and figure some of this stuff out with a bit more info off to the side. but now i have even more confusion lol. it just must not be my game type for pvp cause pve is fun but i never see any reason to do most combos or moves at all in this game. it just feels so flat and uninspired. and heres why
combos: they never seem worth it. so far every combo ive tried in the arena just uses more stamina for less damage than regular attacks. it seems each hero has a better light attack or a better strong attack and theres no seeming reason to use the other one. unless they do something other than more damage per stamina or something. the only strategy i can see id ever use in pvp (which is hardly worth it in pve either.) is pick the better damage per stamina ratio move of whatever hero im using. and get one hit in when i can and back away, rinse, repeat. i see far too many disadvantages to doing anything else. i still believe i am missing core mechanics. even the bots in the trials are doing things i dont understand. sometimes after every hit i land they heal back the damage instantly, when charging sometimes after i dodge they do a 180 mid charge to pin me, it feels just like a random chance if they change to block your direction or not. at this point it must just be **** ai cause im utterly baffled. i guess ill finish the storyline just throwing people off bridges until i have some epiphany or realize my controllers broken or idek what else at this point. thanks for the help. im just glad i didnt buy this game at full price.
