I think the current system makes no sense as suggested. There are a million ammo crates aswell, so it is hardly necessary either.

The auto ammo pickup system is just plain dumb all together. I would have never of expected to encounter such a feature in a “tactical shooter” game.
If you could only pickup ammo of the same type as ammo your using then maybe but personally I’d just rather the feature be removed or should I rephrase it, I’d like the feature to be toggled on/off in the settings so we can play how we all want.
Sniper Elite is a good example to emulate.
It’s got a fantastic suite of options to really customise your experience.
It’s had ‘realistic reload’ from day one, you can also set the ammo abundance in the level.
Also importantly you have to search dead bodies to find ammo - and the ammo corresponds with the weapon the enemy was holding.
This is something that needs to be addressed, because I’m tired of automatically hoovering up ammo after a firefight even tho none of it actually fits my weapon.
Infinite ammo. I hate it.
