I'd like a larger selection of operators - 12 or so - that you pick up to 3 from for any particular mission. They gain experience the more you use them, are specialists in certain weapons or vehicle handling (yeah that too) and suffer either permadeath (but gamer rage probably) or a recuperation period for game days/weeks that is quicker if you get medical supplies.
Whatever it takes to engender a feeling in the player that they have a duty of care for their AI team.

I just think it would work kinda like FALLOUT 4. If they bleed out, they return to your home base.
So in this game you would have to return to a friendly outpost, and you would have the option there for them to rejoin your squad.
It would just make combat more tense. High stakes.
Knowing that, until you are able to return to a friendly outpost, if you go down, no one will revive you.
Just makes combat have greater consequence, more tense, and well, more interesting.
I think on the games higher difficulties - things like this should implement. Make things hardcore.
