Hi.
Just bought a light combat helicopter the little red one, it's the first time i fly choppers in this great game, but are the choppers realy so slow? Almost seems like you stand still. Is it any way to get them to go faster?
Thanks for answers.
I was just responding in another thread on that very subject. In my experience, with the ones I've flown so far anyway, yes, they are way too slow. This includes Adelaide's heli too, whom is one of the specialist companions, so you'd think at least SHE would have a fast heli. The fact that it's so slow is probably why she usually gets shot down within a minute, even against a light ground crew.
The same size helis in Ghost Recon Wildlands fly faster and maneuver much faster. With a little practice you can actually dodge SAM missiles with them. Even the big slow helis in GRW fly faster than the ones in this game when they get up to speed.
LOLOLOL
And I am sure you can tell you are traveling 300-500MPH when you fly on a commercial Jet too, cause you know it doesn't matter if you frame of reference is different, you can just tell right??
Choppers in FC5 fly about 70 MPH....maybe slower than real life, but then so are planes, cars and pretty much everything....including RPGs.
You can fly from one side of the map to the other in about 4 minutes in a chopper, and if you are hugging the ground and flying, it seems adequate to the game. Now if the game was 3 times in size, yeah, may be an issue, but since it is just 8km wide, speed is fine.
Choppers in GRW are maybe faster, but then they have a bigger sandbox to play in and travel across, as well as NOT having flares to dodge those pesky AA missiles... GRW choppers are more twitchy while FC5 are more smooth and arcadey...but then FC5 choppers fit the games play-style and GRW ones fit the more Mil Sim feel....even if in the end I like the controls on FC5 better.
Maybe faster? YA THINK?Originally Posted by modmcsupersport Go to original post
Seriously though, I don't care about the size of the world, the slow speed and sluggish maneuverability greatly affects how vulnerable you are to fire, which is the main point, not travel speed.
I'll put it another way, if I can instantly get killed by a mini gun heli merely for not having the luxury of being close enough to cover I can dash to when one comes, I sure as HELL am going to get shot down if flying one of those snails.
Quite frankly I felt less vulnerable flying Nicks plane in the mission you're introduced to him, than I did flying Adelaide's chopper in the mission you're introduced to her. This has zero to do with controls or size of map.
In single player I rarely get shot down in a chopper....did recently cause I was playing on my phone trying to find a timer app to see speed and ignored all incoming enemies....sniper shot a rpg/AA missile at me. But like I said, If I could have remembered to switch to them, there are flares on those choppers to handle AA missiles too.
Honestly, maybe it is play style, or personal preference, but you pick up one of the paid choppers or one you get free as a bonus for either Gold edition or early buying and it has guns, rockets and flares, it is hard to die in one if you are moving. I know I have a much easier time dealing with planes, choppers, ground units, outposts and heck just about anything in a chopper over a plane. I am much more likely to crash and die in a plane than a chopper, and can usually kill anything attacking me well before it becomes an issue.
Well I didn't know some helis have flares, but as you said that may be only in certain versions of the game like Gold Edition. I definitely prefer something with more speed and maneuverability to spamming flares though. I'll check the heli models where you can buy them to see if any have speed stats or flares, but quite frankly after seeing how slow Ade's was, I don't have much confidence I'll find what I'm looking for. I've survived pretty well just via going afoot, wingsuit gliding, and now and then fast traveling, and mostly via stealth.
At any rate, despite my hating the choppers in this game, it's a minor nit pick compared to my main complaints, which are more about squad AI quirks, their constantly repeating and interrupted dialog, and there being WAY too much drug crap in the game. It's a silly romp through drug zombie land.
No, it wouldn’t be slower, which is precisely my point.Originally Posted by Kane_sg Go to original post

When skimming along at near tree-top level in any helo, the speed does not appear to be what one would expect if it was irl. You're simply not going as fast as one might be able to so so.
I'm not aware of any speed variances in the various helo models available either, from my experiences.
The map size might be the reason for the setting of helo speed, since it doesn't really take long at all to cover the map (if not using FT) as already mentioned.
