Another one here who can't catch the damn Admiral. Tried for about 20 mins then gave up.

Caught him, but I was on the edge of giving up yet again!

I found that you have to be really aggressive with this fish - you have to have that line right on the brink of snapping the whole time, it's the only way you'll tire him out. If you keep letting him take too much line you'll never get him in.

It took me around 15 minutes, and several line breaks.
Over the weekend, my wife and I were playing co-op, and I watched her try it. It took her two tries, and a grand total of less than three minutes, with the second fishing rod.

I discovered yesterday that when I finally caught the Admiral, I’d done so on the basic fishing rod and weakest line. No wonder i struggled!

Anybody that says this was too easy, or they caught the fish in a few tries is lying, pure and simple. There is a glitch in this quest and as far as I'm concerned this is another bad aspect of this game I will just be avoiding. When the game first came out I did this quest and after a few tries yes I landed the admiral. I did not purchase the Wonderboy though. Since then there have been a few patches and I believe the engineers in their attempt to be annoying made the quest harder. I have tried this quest several times and spent way too long on it. After the stinking fish has snapped the line 3 or more times even the comments from Skylar stop and she no longer says the "fish is tiring" or "you got this". It's just more of the same BS (I've had the fish on the line for over 20 minutes straight watching the line go from green to yellow to red and back to green until at one point the line goes from green to red before you can even react and the line snaps.) I just will not even start with Skylar anymore. I played through the miserable endings just to get the New Game + option. But I usually avoid both of the disappointing endings. Now I will just avoid the entire Skylar line as well.

Took me 6-7 attempts (Mouse+2nd rod+perk).

Wasn't too difficult. I'd say the important thing is to use your ears. And I'd agree with others who have said that it helps to keep your rod low most of the time.
