What A Lousy, Lousy Game FC5 Turned Out To Be
Having seen the promo videos for Far Cry 5, I was expecting a wonderful new FC5 installment, fully of interesting new things to do. Bought it immediately when it came out.
What a big mistake that turned out to be...
This game is lacking in every way, and I give it a 3 out of 10 stars rating.
- Story - extraordinarily dumb. Cultists - you could have made them non-Christians you know? not everybody is a European Atheist - shut down an entire valley in the U.S., and somehow nobody notices and you are the only guy who can defeat them. That makes a lot of sense, Ubisoft... Of course nobody would notice something like this happening at all.
- Gameplay - totally repetitive run, sneak, drive & shoot gameplay. The same thing over and over and over again.
- Physics - almost non-existent bar some ragdolls and some stuff you can drive through - you can't even make a tree fall over in this game, dig a hole in the ground or roll a large object over and down a hill. Very impressive for a full price AAA game in 2018! Well done.
- Interaction - where is it??? Why can't you interact with more objects in the environment, have a proper inventory/backpack, pick up and examine whatever you want, throw whatever you want and so on? FC5 feels like a demo of an open world game engine with the game itself not built yet.
- Character interaction - games 25 years ago had multiple-choice dialogue for talking with other characters. Your dialogue choices had consequences back then. In FC5, you press "E", and the characters tell you to search for Bobby McBoobiemac's prepper stash somewhere. How fun and non-linear, Ubisoft!
- User interface - I hate the Q-menu design, the non-working cycling through the scroll wheel items, and the way you have assigned keyboard and mouse controls in this game in general. Fail.
- Open World - nice and big, sometimes pretty... except that you can barely interact with anything meaningfully, and that the world is rather boring and repetitive.
My verdict - you must have done this one with no more than 25 people working, in about 18 months, and rushed it to market 2 years before it was actually done.
This just does not feel like a well-crafted, satisfying Far Cry game. Sorry.
And no, I probably won't be buying Far Cry 6, because you are probably going to give us the same simple game mechanics with different baddies again.
