If you reference the map updates for speeds:
Merchant speeds are 6, 9, 12 for slow, medium, fast.
Warship speeds are 6, 12, 18, respectively.
Roughly, of course, but I find they generally follow these speeds exactly.

At least automatic targeting could be said to simulate having a very sharp-eyed weapons officer at your side. Map updates is just a cheat. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
Hmm I take exception to this. I don't think either is a 'cheat' per say. It's all based on your own view of tedium vs. satisfaction. I agree that the auto targeting simulates your weapons officer, but I would also say that the map updates merely simulate the plotter.
When you aren't actually there on the submarine, looking out the periscope, with a real live crew to update you on contact status, I'm willing to take a few liberties.
(I play with 80% realism: map updates and external cam)

I thought I'd just bump this in conjunction with my "Manual TDC" tutorial.

yngvef,
Between this and your discreption of Manual TDC you should work for Ubisoft. They need you. The Research and Development on the game manual is sadly lacking. Thank you for taking the time to post. I have printed you comments and reference them frequently. The game is much more challenging and more fun. Again Thanks for your post.

"...Later, if people are interested, I can post the length of all ships in the game (from the recognition manual). But this will take some time because there are a lot of ships, and not all the names in the paper manual are the same as in the game. I'll have to "translate" some of them first. If you want this, let me know in this thread."
Yngvef, We need it, i used to measure the lenghth of the this on the navigation(LOL) map but of cause it was very inacurate.
Thank You.

Glad to hear it Tigershark33
captainZYX, I'll do this within 4-5 hours. Right now I got to work on my studies
. You can also use the excellent technique described by luviera on this thread to find out the length of a ship in the in-game recognition manual.

Bumping this to show the new "Ship Length"-list to everyone. I've edited the first post in the thread with the new list.

Thank you yngvef!
I have been contemplating going manual tdc since I bought SH4 but could noever bring myself to make the jump. The game manual seemed too generic on the subject and I could never seem to find a speed calc that didn't involve relearning high school math.
Another reson was I used the argument that a real sub captain had crew members doing most of these calculations for him, so why should I run around gathering all the information like I was driving a minisub solo!
I see now that manual tdc use is about experiencing the attack from more than one viewpoint and filling the roll of several important crew members. It is probably ALOT more gratifying as well.
Your method of using the periscope, a stop watch, and a notepad (or calculator) sounds like alot of fun! Think I will finally do some practice, install TM 1.5, and manual tdc a go!
