CO-OP Guest progression interfering with host progression

I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere else, so apologies if it's already a known issue.

I played an hour or two of the single player campaign before joining a co-op session with a friend that was hosting. In my own game I got off the starter island, and liberated Falls End.

When I joined my friend's co-op game I noticed that I had some of the story missions already checked off in my journal. He picked up and tracked the Falls End mission, but when we got there the town was already liberated.

It would appear that if guest with single player progression joins a hosted game that isn't as far along in the story the missions will be bugged or show as already completed for the host. I thought that the progression was only saved on the host side, so it shouldn't matter how far the guest has gotten.

Is there a known fix or workaround for this (apart from deleting all saves and starting over)?

Don't see an edit button, but wanted to note: this only seems to be an issue with the main quest line. The prepper caches and other outposts are still tracked correctly in the host's game regardless of progress made in the guests single player campaign. Since the Falls End liberation is actually a main story quest the problem is probably tied into main story progress.
