Is 5.1 Surround broken in this game like it was in FC4 and Watchdogs?

Is 5.1 surround broken on this as it was with both FC4 and Watchdogs? I just upgraded to Logitech's Z906 5.1 surround per a glowing review here on PC Gamer as it was on sale on Amazon.com and now Far Cry 4 has no audio, period. Apparently FC4, as with Watch Dogs before it, can only do two channel stereo, and instead of your 5.1 surround system just playing the game in stereo, as it plays Netflix content in stereo, it just doesn't output any audio at all. And there is no fix other than going in and setting your soundcard to stereo, special for FC4. No thanks, I'll just uninstall and ask whether or not the braindead ******s at Ubibroke make yet another title, in 2018, in two channel stereo.

This problem is plagueing Far Cry 3, 4, Primal and Watch Dogs (2 also? don't remember) and was never acknowledged let alone fixed as far as I know.

Basically any Dolby Digital Live / DTS Connect encoded signal over SPDIF output (both optical and coax) for Realtek soundcard chips in particular did not work with these games and you had to either use the regular analogue line-out or switch to stereo output (PCM).

If you have your PC hooked up to a 5.1 surround set or your home cinema receiver this is a real pain in the ***.

This is a different situation from using the 7.1 HyperX USB headset as this headset does not use SPDIF or Dolby (digital) encoding.

Having said that; I am glad to say Far Cry 5 does not have this problem! I am using DTS Connect over an optical connection from my PC (Realtek ALC1150) to home cinema set (Yamaha receiver). Works fine.

I will check if positional audio is actually working in Far Cry 5 and report back.

UPDATE Unbelievable, they have managed to **** this up again. DTS Connect over SPDIF is working, but it is in stereo not 5.1. Rear/side speakers have no output...

So to answer your question: yes it is broken, but at least there is sound.

I am opening a tech support post and ticket.

Scratch that, some people don't have sound in this situation. Look here: https://forums.ubi.com/showthread.php/1860211-No-sound

    So no, NOT FIXED.

Thanks for the replies! I can't believe this is still a problem! Why is this even a problem to begin with?

Well thanks for corroborating what I've heard elsewhere, that switching from SPDIF to analogue may be one way to solve the issue, my Asus Xonar DX has both analogue and optical out, but I hear that the surround system in question, Logitech's Z906, sounds better over optical / Dolby Digital.

To be honest though, it's way too much hassle for one game, (FC4). I will probably just uninstall the game, I picked it up on sale for $9 and to be honest, although I mostly enjoyed FC3 (except the hunting elements, so sick of this barbaric aspect of the game, no I don't want to kill some endangered species, replete with some disgusting skinning animation and sound effects simply to carry more grenades) and FC4 is pretty much the same game.

To be honest, I think I'm done with this series. I have way too many good games on the backlog, many of which deserve a second playthrough before touching this mediocrity from Ubibroke.

    "You Be Soft"

Also of interesting note, since we are talking about "You Be Soft", and how the game is kinda attempting to stigmatize cults and makes a vague reference to David Koresh and the Branch Davidians of Waco, Texas with its art style and depiction of Jason Seed, yeah basically they were murdered by the FBI:

It seem "You Be Soft" is a propaganda outlet owned by the elites tasked with perpetuating certain narratives.

What if you just have a surround sound set of speakers hooked up to your sound card? I am not getting rear channel sound with my setup.

Not sure it's the game at fault?

If we talk about Realtek onboard sound chip I find the 5.1 configuration (audio manager) does not have side/back sound at all ( just the fronts work) - switch to 7.1 all speakers are okay but FC4 still no side sound. I think Realtek got its share in the dilemma and BTW Realtek does not provide individual (working) sound level adjustments for the sides/back - I have the Z506 system here.

FC3 works fine with onboard realtek and 5.1/ 7.1 with optical/ toslink so no, it isn;t a problem with realtek. Other games work too, so no, not a problem with realtek.
