I just started playing again, my highest guy is a 34 LB. I am competitive with him etc. I started playing orochi and I am at like 3/14 with him and I am getting destroyed by pretty 90% of the ppl I go against. I play Dominion and some Tribute. I also fly solo, only been a pre formed group like 3 times since I've started playing.
It's a joke how bad I get crushed. Lots of hyper armor flying around etc. I can't defend long enough cause I die in like 3 hits. One mistake I'm pretty much done. Is it me just not being completely fluid with him cause of experience or is Orochi just super weak vs the new dlc characters and their kits, and the reworked ones? Feels like I am swinging a tooth pick...
In a lot of ways orochi isn’t great... especially to start with. I’ve been maining orochi since Jan and had the same problem. Here’s a couple things I’ve learnt that might help (from losing over and over mind you, but I go pretty well now!):
Reflex guard isn’t anything like your normal guard, there is a delay in changing directions and to initiate a block in the same direction again you actually have to reset/go to another direction and come back, a lot of orochi players will flick their guard full circle to both confuse the opponent and also keep guard up in a particular direction. Can be a headache against light spam or if you get caught by consecutive hits from the same direction. Not a problem once you get used to it but from LB (I was maining raider so same block) it feels like you’ve taken off the training wheels.
Never use your dodge attacks as openers, you’ll get constantly punished by anyone average or above. Orochi is best used to counter attack. Deflects are good as long as you pick an attack that you won’t trade with (lots of hyper armour here will see orochi worse off for the extra effort), and top lights are the well known go to for orochi, a lot of players will simply leave the guard up top. Bait with side feints and hammer home double top lights, mix up the directions. Oh and, deflects will not stop a chain, so ara will keep it up and hit you for a trade just because... doesn’t seem fair given the timing and risk you successfully pulled off for nought! But that’s how it is.
Also I’ve found top heavies from gb aren’t connecting whereas side heavies do. I’m definitely a problem for players 1v1 now, but if you’re getting ganked you’re almost as good as over, 3 heavies is all it takes to take us out, go patient, see what the enemy is capable of and batter the hell out of them for any kind of pattern they follow.
Also against other assassins, dodge attack after they dodge attack will connect, get gb happy on them. In contrast I’ve discovered I cannot gb a Kensei dodge attack, you bounce off and eat the damage. Parry or dodge attacking yourself are the best options here. Most shaman and ara players back right off if you manage to hit them with a riptide strike too, it’s risky but does a lot of damage.
If you find yourself sitting in front of opponent who will not attack, get ready for a hard slog... I’ve found those players generally know everything you’re capable of. Bait, stay away, keep your patience. Orochi goes down way to fast on the offence. Pick them apart for minor damage, you gotta get in their head so they start making punishable mistakes.
I find orochi absolutely rewarding to play with, you really feel you’ve won every fight. He gets nothing for free and usually it comes with a high cost too. Sorry if it’s all a bit scatterbrained, it’s late here and I should be sleeping, but I’m glad to help out if you’ve any qs in particular.
I’m still learning too so if anyone else has anything to add/correct go for it, would love to read.
Ah ha! You know I think the reflex guard is a big problem cause so many times I just stand there taking a beating and I'm like WTF! I am pushing that way! Hard habit to break with muscle memory I guess... I guess I knew that but in the heat of battle muscle memory prevails.
I found Kensei a nightmare to gb too, I'll get stubborn and keep trying while he dashes and cuts me in half. Is that cause of hyper armor? Seems like highlander can be like that too. HL is awkward to counter attack and like 2-3 hits it's goodnight. He looks so unorthodox when fighting him.
No doubt you earn every win with a orochi, you get really nothing free with little defense and hps. The LB can just sit back block/shove/light if you need to, plus he has armor and hps. Just way more forgiving. Winning with orochi is satisfying I'll say that. Especially when you land a deflect or 2 and a riptide or something. It's so smooth when it goes right. It's those few moments that pulls me back in so to speak...
Yeah I had a massive problem blocking with my face for a while... Orochi's face is too soft for that! :P
I ended up backing right out and setting up a custom match, turned damage off, then throw in an Ara bot lvl 3 just to try and block everything he has. I think it helped :P That's where I learnt deflect was mostly useless against him in particular and the reflex guard is slower than what I was used to... I did the same with a raider and ara couldn't get passed my block. Big difference.
Re: Kensei, It's not the hyper armour, i was wondering whether it was just his movement or whether the Kensei's (or raider, as raider has a dodge attack too) is not classed the same as an assassins dodge attack, whether its the equivalent to GBing a light attack or something. I slowed down the animation and it was more like i bumped into him when i go for a GB and he bumps me out of the way, i get a stagger and Kensei just follows through with his attack. I duel'd against this one guy who was perfect practice for it, every time the GB would bounce off... saw it happen at least 6 or 7 times. Parry would shut him down, but I found my own dodge attack was more guaranteed.
I kinda never want to admit it... But Highlander initially gave me the most trouble. Everyone on the forums was saying how bad he is and usually I don't have much trouble with him, but my god can he eat an Orochi like he's at a hot dog competition. So many of his attacks have hyper armour and the trade is catastrophic,,, Not to mention he swings that thing so damn fast for loads of damage, and his caber toss had way more tracking than I remember. Early on (like rep 1 or so) I must've ben in 10 or so brawl matches against this one guy using HL that I just couldn't get through. I'd love to have another go at him now (Think i'm currently rep 7 or so). I've either learnt or haven't come across someone that good with him since. At the moment (especially in test your metal) I actually find conq the hardest to break. Stone is really hard to get good damage on, and lots of blocks where he can hit you at the same time... Really have to play it safe against him.
I played 99% Orochi, since Beta, actually im Rep11.
These days you have a hard time with Orochi. We have complete lack of hyper armor and unblockable attacks. While the most other characters have their fancy movesets, hyper armor, unblockables, feints.
Orochi is still devastating as long your skill is higher then your enemies. If he is on a same level, you will have a hard, hard, hard game, because he is so easy to counter and predictable.
I'm desperately looking forward for that rework, really.
Nevermind, he is still fun, some time it's really frustrating though.
Okay if anyone still reads this post and still has trouble with Highlander and Aramusha as Orochi read this.
I've been playing Orochi since march 2017 and I've gotten pretty good with him.
Lets start with Highlander. Highlander is actually really useless against a skilled Orochi. Highlander's forward heavy feint to side is a joke all you have to do is time riptide strike and you get a guaranteed blow. Don't worry if he feints to the side or offensive stance, if he does the side attack it will miss you and riptide strike will track him, and if he goes offensive stance he doesn't have enough time to kick or grab you so he's toast. Another thing to counter his offensive stance is storm rush, but this has more risk since, if he is fast enough he might be able to switch his stance and block you or he might be able to grab you.
Aramusha is a little tricky but has in fact a massive weakness. His second heavy finisher can be countered by riptide strike. Again don't worry if he soft faints, his light attack won't reach and if he commits to the heavy finisher he'll still miss. If you deflect you can't, and I repeat you can't use wind gust or, as has been posted here he'll stop it. You must use hurricane blast since it has hyperarmor and can't be stopped by any of his attacks and when it connects it will stop his chain and if he doesn't expect it you might also be able to guard break him after hurricane blast and land another heavy, for extra damage.
I hope this helps any new, present, or struggling Orochi.

Hi, back with another tip.
I see that a lot of you try to guard break the Kensei while dodging. If you see that a Kensei is dodging sideways use lightning strike very quickly, it has tracking so you'll hit him before he hits you. And don't worry if he doesn't attack his guard will change according to the direction he dodged thus leaving his top guard open to attack. If you see he's using swift strike and you're not sure lightning strike will be activated early enough, use zephyr slash in the same direction he's dodging to stop any incoming attack.
Should make swift strike spamming Kensei a little easier to defeat. Hope this helps.
Orochi is horrible he’s my favorite but doesn’t even compete against anyone else he’s slow and damage is horrible a berserks light does more damage than an orochi’s heavy attack he’s slow than most characters besides the heavier he’s slower than some of them too it seems like he’s an assassin but feels like a grandma with a sword. Yeah his moves are good but his speed and damage are just horrible compared to all the other assassins
