Certain times of day, I swear there are only like 5 people playing! Is it just my region are is this game suffering major losses?

Nope many players are quitting.
Another factor in this are famous youtube players like oamp quitting.

Ahh. Saw your reply after I asked again. I got it. I'll have to do some more research on the number of people quitting.

2 reasons:
- Less active players for sure
- They're supposed to have updated the matchmaking in a way that it tries longer to find an opponent of your rank before setting a game against someone else (February 8th update). So if you wait for a long time there's a high chance you'll face someone much higher or much lower ranked/levelled than you. Before that update they tried to find an opponent the fastest possible leading to where we are now.

On my side if I find the matchmaking's taking a long time, I just cancel and start again. And to be fair these days I haven't fought many silver shields (and I quite often give them the win), most of my opponents are L players (usually at much worse rank though ...)
