Id gladly sacrifice a little graphics and be and be able to share the experience then have it look really good and play by myself. Besides whats the point of these ridculously expensive systems and computers if they cant do both. Technology is definitely good enough for just look a GRW. Great game, good graphics, 4player coop. Hell even farcry 3 had all those and splitscreen and thats the best farcry they ever made to me.Originally Posted by OWGKID Go to original post
There are plenty of reasons why FPS these days dont get split screen, and sadly - they are all good.
2 players split screen means halfing the frame rate or halfing the visual fidelity by a very meaningful amount.
not true numbers, but reducing it significantly.
and not only that - you will have to calculate everything that's going on around the players twice, and in an open world where two players can go their own different ways - that's a lot to calculate on one single console.
and you want 4 players split screen? you will be playing on a very small screen with a very demanding comptations that will severly reduce performance.
FC3 had small separate maps for that mode and not a lot of those maps. i dont remember who many where there but not a lot.
PCs might be able to handle split screen better but how many PC gamers can and want and going to play scplit screen on their gaming PC??!
You need someone with a powerful PC, AND dual monitors or large TV connected to the computer, AND who has a controller or two controllers AND gamer friends that will come by often enough to play and enough of these very specific type of crowd to warrent a development of such a feature.
even on console its just not enough to warrant all the budget that will need to go into developing this. its not justing splitting the screen, you know. its coding the game to split the power of the console in creating two identical worlds and stream textures for each player and make it run simultaniously on 30fps without dropping. and manipulating visual quality to get an OK look at the same time.
or creating separate small maps for such a game mode which will require more programmers, artists and budget. and that's not even the main selling point of FC. FC is an open world game. this isnt a nintendo brawl game.
All this will mean less budget for the main game, or MP or map editor or whatever is being developed and since the split screen crowd is significantly smaller than the online coop crowd than the majority of players will suffer just so a small marginal split screen players will be able to enjoy a mode. and my bet is that UBI knows how many players played split screen in FC3 and assume this isnt a big enough audience to split the money from their main audience into split screen.

To begin with the consoles now a days can handle this it just the lack their of the developers wanting to put the time and money into. Second their is a bigger audience then you think thats wants and that wants splitscreen and 4player coop, its just we have gotten so used not having that we over look the fact that it doesnt. Last but not least that the problem with gamers these days they are mostly concerned with how a game looks that they ignore how it plays. The fact most of the stuff we do is online people forget where it started same couch gameplay. Besides another to look at is socializing studies has shown that you can enjoy an experience better with a person in right next to you then Online with the same person. Thats whats wrong with gamers today they mostly want online because that all their given if they go back they wont like it much because thats not what their used to. Unless your old school and started playing that way. All in all like said id rather have a game i can play with group of friends and the graphics dont look that good with good gameplay then to i have a game that looks like your watching a movie and i can only play by myself or with some random i dont even know or never met. Plus i cant even make a connection because its ONLINE ONLY. Mind you i havr been lay Ubisoft get since OG xbox. I personally love ubisoft games always have always will. Just dont like that they have gotten rid of one of their strongest roots that made them who they are today.Originally Posted by topeira1980 Go to original post
....and just to clarify my last statement, I meant 4 player co-op online.Originally Posted by GHOST2STEP Go to original post
I'm probably a little older than some. ....been gaming since the 70s. I spent a lot of time in arcades growing up had friends with Atari's, had an Intellivision and even a system called the Bally Arcade before that. Back then it was all about going to friend's houses and playing their systems (whoever had the best one usually). It was a fun time and experience.
Moving through the 80s, my parents bought me a Commodore 64 which began my move to computer gaming. I later bought my first "real" PC which had a 386 processor. I was a PC Gamer for many years but even during those early times I dabbled in online play. I didn't move back to console until the PS3.
Split screen is fun and I have games that I will break out on occasion when I have a friend over who wants to play. .....but those moments are relatively rare. Nearly all of my "gaming buddies" are online and not actual friends that I associate with beyond that.
In this day and age, it's easy enough to meet like-minded players. My PSN friends have all been vetted so what I am left with are folks who I can truly get along with and enjoy the same gameplay I do.
Personally, split screen gameplay just isn't important to me as it used to be in those early days. I suspect it's the same for most which is one reason why developers these days don't implement the mode as much as they used to. With the many ways players can meet fellow gamers, join communities, etc., it's really convenient. As internet speeds increased, this also helped in that regard.
Having said all that, as my son gets older we have been playing games like Lego and Minecraft in split screen together. ....so the desire to retain that feature in the gaming world is not lost on me.
