I add onto it hitchhiking extractions already in progress. It's risky, but since the players are THERE, you can scope them out ahead of time from a safe distance and determine if you want to try putting your stuff on the rope. The extra players (assuming they aren't rogues-to-be) are good for helping against rogues, and if the timer is already part-finished and no rogues have shown, your odds are better than if you had to stand there the entire time, alone.

And there are methods - not 100% sure, but decent - for figuring out if a player or a team are set up for Farming or PvP. It's pretty safe trying to extract with a group of Farmers. What skills they deploy against the NPC's is a good start for working out their 'affiliation'. And I don't try to hitchhike when I see a large group of players unless I'm 99% sure they're farmers - 3-4 is generally something I avoid.

Again, risky, but there are ways to cut that risk and the whole DZ thing is risky anyway.

Concealed pulse is your biggest friend here, allowing you to get close and check out the other players without getting noticed.

Knowing the area like the back of your hand helps as well. I can muddle my way through most of the DZ and not get totally lost, but DZ 09 I know solidly, which not only helps getting all of the DivTech, but losing Rogues if they start in on me. I'm no escape artist, but I get away more than I die, and that's the important thing.
Good advice. Something else I have done is to do a bit of recon at specific extractions when servers are quiet. I find places to hide outside the pulse radius which I run to after setting off the extraction. I work out, almost to the second how long it takes for a clear run from that position back to the rope and aim to hit the rope every time at 7 seconds. I practice with junk I find lying about.

Once I am ready to extract I put on survivor link and time my run from my hiding place to the rope precisely. When I hit the rope if no one is there I hang and take cover. It is extremely rare for anyone to be able to get on the rope in that small window if they are hiding. If anyone is present, I pop blue and hang then prepare to defend the rope.

You can also put on an immunizer and shock turret and drop those before hanging. You can still get 'ganked' but as long as the rope gets out, who cares? Get a weapon with Determined on or Skilled and Determined even. This allows you to get your signature back quickly and ensures you are fully charged for the next extraction.

Someone mentioned they made a Nomad build specifically for cutting ropes. I'm seriously thinking about building one specifically for extracting. Immunizer, shock turret, 10K stamina, 700K Toughness, 32.5% EDR and 63% bleed resistance. Putting the pieces together now.

There is a lot of advice how to get through the Dark Zone. I wrote my original post after I tried to do exactly that, avoid other players, go to places that seemed empty. Two extractions I just had to abort and I was able to get away. Third attempt I got run over. Lost over an hour (minus the stuff that lands in the normal inventory). I simply do not want to put up with 4 man teams set to get on my nerves. If I want to play PvP I'd go for the Terminal. That's all.

Anyway, I read quite a bit in the forums now and obviously this discussion is nothing new to veteran players and I don't expect Massive to change the way things are. If only PvE players would avoid the DZ completely. Like, don't feed the trolls...

Yeah...that does still happen. Sometimes the Rogues ignore the manhunts and come after the extractions instead. :P

Not sure if this was already suggested didn't really have time to read the whole thread...
Do things that give a lot of random gear in general such as underground, open world bosses, HVTS, make sure to do your legendary missions and incursions. Break down everything for materials and some items will give you Dtech too.

Once you've piled up a ton of weapon parts and tools craft Damascus pistols and break them down too for 1 Dtech each. You usually run out of tools first so buy a ton of weapon attachments and break them all down for materials too.

As for legendary missions they are quite doable without classy gear. Tactician, reclaimer and sentry all work great without the classified set.

I'll add a couple of extra tips to those - don't DZ in the evening.
Best time I've found is during the morning or Sat afternoon when all the thugs have gone to the football

if you extract in the dz north, set off a false one first then run to the next and set that off. or really you can use that with any two extraction locations that are close together. helps if you have more than one person in your group so more than one person can call the extractions.

I did that one day. I picked up a pc of trash and ran from 1 extraction to another setting them off. I had some Rogues chase me from DZ1 it took them till about DZ5 to catch me That was a fun day, the NPCs were on my side and kept slowing them down. I guess that's what they get for ganking a solo player trying to farm. hehehehe
