It has many draw backs:
- costs stamina
- if opponent is mid light, cc, zone, pretty much anything but a heavy you will eat the attack. That being said even during the heavy start up some characters won’t be guard broken like aramusha, and others must be done almost instantaneously to the opponent pressing the heavy button i.e. An immediate counter to an attempted parry.
- if you’re by a ledge and get countered you’re instantly dead
- against ranged characters you’ll often times wiff resulting in being GB yourself
- if your opponent presses the GB just ever so slightly after you do, it can result in a GB for them despite timing being almost exactly the same but barely delayed on their end
What GB really counters are a parry attempt (isn’t that largely what people have problems with? Parry has too much incentive and is the whole argument for defensive meta) and balances out someone who plays very defense reactive reducing the parry incentives, and dodges, which are largely what makes assassins so mobile. It balances out their mobility and quick attacks.
A standard heavy and sometimes only just a light is all you get from a typical GB. Taking in account how situational (as described above) GB is, it is really kind of a small reward to punish someone who plays very predictably or tuttle like.
I think the real problem people have with GB is the POTENTIAL it presents I.e. ledging, wall splat for high damaging heavy, or OOS punish up to 90 damage with berserk. What most fail to realize is that it isn’t the GB mechanics fault. It’s easy to say “if I hadn’t been GB while OOS, or against a wall or ledge, I would have won” but the reality is GB has not only a CGB, but also is susceptible to attacks in its own right, but IT DOESNT PUT YOU, THE RECIPIENT OF GB into these situations, only you can do so.
If you mind your surroundings and stamina, GB will always just be that: a low damaging heavy for trying to dodge, parry, or simply not getting the timing right on CGB.
Now don’t get this twisted, this isn’t a git gud post. I mess up a lot, I really do. I miss the timing all the time to CGB. I get caught mid dodge and heavy all the time. I allow myself to backwards dodge towards hazards and walls ALL THE TIME. The point is that the majority of what people find wrong with GB is really the complete unbalance of what each hero can do with the worst case scenario that GB has the potential to give. On one hand you get a standard heavy with HL for throwing someone on the ground who is OOS, on the other hand you get 90 damage for a berserker. One hand you get ledged by a very large throw distance of a warlord, shaman or raider charge while some of the other cast can’t throw you into a wall 2 feet away.
That’s really what is the problem with GB in my eyes. It’s not the mechanic itself rather the balancing issues with the characters.
