Can’t seem to win the sea battles

I’m stuck in Aya Blade of the Goddess - sink the fleet. Just cannot seem to win this sea battle, and I can’t exit this quest, or choose another quest until I do win it. I’ve managed to sink the large enemy ship just once in hours and hours of trying, but was then so weak, I was sunk by one of the “easy” small enemy ships. But if I sink them first, I am then left with the big’un whilst in an already weakened state. Can you choose to skip a quest to get through to the next stage, or exit this darned stage, to return to other sub quests? HELP!!

Didn't really have any trouble with destroying the fleet in this: generally run at the higher speed throughout, as soon as you get the warning that there's arrows incoming you take cover and then release as soon as they're deflected to release your own salvo, when you get an enemy ship close enough in front of you hold that button for ramming speed and chuck firebombs when you strike. Rinse and repeat. Think I was down to about half health by time I finished.

I took out the smaller guys first. Every time I neared the big main ship I used my speed to get away from it, although if prompted I would firebomb it to just to soften it up. Always take cover and never return volley when it prompts; the big ship always fires three arrow waves and when prompted there's still one more wave to go, which causes damage. Just take your sweet time.

When hitting the smaller guys, try to position your ship on the far side of one of the little guys, basically putting the little ship(s) between you and the big one. This creates a cover of sorts as the big guy won't firebomb, which would put the little guy in jeopardy. They'll fire the arrows but hitting your cover when prompted makes it all manageable.

They got me on the first try but I beat it on the second.

The key is counter fire. I never really fired arrows on my own, just wait for them to fire, take cover and release the second they hit to return your own volley automatically. Couple of tries and you will get the timing. Ramming smaller ships help and use fire bombs every chance you get. Those don't require the wasted time of lining up a shot they target automatically (aside from ramming obviously you need to steer). If you focus more on deflecting and automatically returning fire over lining up shots, you can protect your health way easier. And if happen to have the Ambush at Sea DLC, that strategy is best for the giant ship as it can be deadly if you don't keep moving or get to close.

How do you counter fire? I have been trying to find the button for it......

IIRC, counter fire is releasing your cover button in the short window after the enemy arrows have hit. I think that was R1? Anyway, hold it to cover, release right after, and you should get a volley off.

TC, I'm guessing you didn't play much Black Flag, or AC3 or Rogue? Ship battles were major in those. Without that practice, I imagine getting thrown into these ship battles can seem jarring and frustrating.

Many of the tips have already been posted.

    - Fire mortar immediately. You may not get more chances than this, but a free hit is better than nothing.

    - Target smaller ships first, that's less enemy offense to worry about. Try to keep distance from the main ship while doing so. Ram the smaller ships then do a firebomb when prompted, and as you move away be ready to cover and counter-fire.

    - Always be ready to cover (and counter fire). Whatever you're trying to do at that moment, forget about it, cover and counter.

Besides what was mentioned above, don't forget to let off on speed while turning, otherwise the ship with turn like a brick.

The key to sea battles is hold cover and only release when firing, when you hold cover you get very little damage .. hold cover wait for arrows to stop the return fire and hold cover.. rinse and repeat... try and hit the red highlighted parts on the big ships , they go down easy...
