Unfortunately not, in the game you pilot your own ship, the player character is as much the ship as it is the captain if that makes sense.

Yes we were promised an extensive customization of both the ship's captains and the ship but they themselves are a whole unit or a packaged deal. Personally I feel any off shore experience would be not par for the course and aimless with the focus strictly being on naval combat you can expect a polished game and there will certainly be enough to do in the Caribbean if not they could always expand to the lower half of North America and Central America to expand the content of the game.

a pirate game that only contains ONE PART of the pirate fantasy is not a pirate game! and this game is set in the INDIAN OCEAN by the way...making a worse pirate game than black flag is not the solution

I remembered reading it was in the Indian Ocean but I second guessed my comment just like I mistakenly said it was circa 1716 (The start of the Golden Age of Piracy) when in fact the promotional video says 1721 it's my bad really, But it's the part some of us look forward to. I spent the majority of my middle school years playing a game on the Xbox called "Pirates of the Caribbean" (2003) it was created by the company that made Age of Pirates, they actually make extensive pirate games and the naval combat was my favorite part but there were other sections but I didn't feel they were nearly as polished as the naval combat and I have been waiting for another good naval combat game centered around pirates. There was a lot of them in the early 2000's like Bloodwake but I for one can't wait to play this game everyone has expectations but when the developer gives you a clear cut list of features and your trying to change the very core of the game I think you should look at the game in it's current announced state decide if it's worth it to play and if not look elsewhere. If it is, you should settle down with the belly aching and look forward to enjoying the game for what it is.

no, because first they make black flag and then they make an even WORSE pirate game instead of a BETTER one

    Why cant we walk around?

when I first saw the cinematic trailer I nearly burst with excitement that finally I am going to get a pirate game I always wanted which lasted about 15 minutes as I was met with disappointment, after a hour long research of what you were going to be able to do in the game I came across a lot of videos and sites saying that you were not able to leave your ship and explore land which to me was like the ultimate disgrace to a pirate game. The slogan for this game is "become the ultimate pirate" when it should be "become the ultimate captain", being a pirate is more than captaining a ship and crew and then going around blowing ships up, it is a way of life such as going into taverns drinking, burying your treasure and treasure hunting, I wanted everything to do with pirates not a captain, I wanted drinking, making maps of where you buried your treasure, treasure hunting other peoples treasure by stealing their maps, go around blowing ships up on the seas, I wanted a pirate life not a boring captains life, if it does not have these things when the beta comes out, I will not be buying it as I know for a fact I will get bored fast, people think this is the first game of its type when it isn't there are a lot of games out there just like this where you cannot get of your ship except it is more to do with transporting cargo and protecting it from pirates but it is the same principal and it got boring after 1 hour, this feels like a repeat of for honour, my god I was so pumped for that game, played the story and I was disappointed it was so short and it gave you nothing to do except sword fight and then I was thinking ok maybe the online is where all the good stuff is and the story was basically an introduction to the classes and how the mechanics work, nope was so disappointing that is wasn't open world and even more disappointing that it was only a 4v4 battle mode. As this is only mmo the open world is appealing but stuck on a ship non stop sailing doing nothing else, I really don't understand people that say this is a good idea for a game, yes there will be solo missions and that's great but I'm assuming its only a cut scene which sucks, if you are aiming for an amazing pirate game, look at the game sea of thieves that is coming out, that has everything you want from a pirate game except it is only for xbox and you cannot do anything without other players and it looks cartoonish but it is a pirate game and not just a naval warfare game.
