Now that the season has reset, all I can say is the time so far in competitive has been absolutely pathetic since the reset. The teams are rarely ever balanced, and every game consists of having 2 teammates that get 1 kill in a 9 round match. I was a plat 2 main last season, won 8 out of 10 placements finishing either 1st or 2nd on team on average and getting placed in gold 2. I started playing Siege midway through last season so adapted to the well balanced ranked system very quickly, but experiencing my first season reset has been beyond pathetic. There is nothing more excruciating then playing a ranked game with people who somehow are twice the level of me but play as though they use a controller without aim assist on instead of a mouse and its their first game ever. There hasn't been a single balanced game since before White Noise.
Just a friendly reminder that clearance level does not equal skill.
If I see a level 200+, my only thought is "oh, they've been playing this game for a damn long time. I wonder if they are any good." And that's really as far as you would want to go because it also rings true for low levels. Maybe it's a smurf account of a Plat 1 player, and they are destroying people while clearance level 22. You never know, so just wait and see how they play.
With regards to the matchmaking, what system are you guys on?
I am on PS4 and I have not seen any oddities with this new season - in fact, I have been playing with a stronger group of people constantly either Silver 1 through Gold 1 as opposed to last season where the MM was showing me people all across the board.
You have to remember that there may be people in ranked that just want a little continuity and not really worried about rank. There are a lot of casual soloist in the rank system and casual isn't well known for its matchmaking or group policies either (although Noty implied that they try to group with group if possible?).
Bottom line, I would not suggest relying on the automated group making system. I've soloed to Bronze-copper trying to win and then helping my 'squad' gold-plat after placement and 4-5 matches to boot (this was end of last year). In the past I've even thought one reason for the map removal was to get rid of the casual rankers and now I'm even more accepting of that idea.
Rock Bottom line, take your chances or get a group. Ubi is not going to get you the perfect squad. Heck, they would have to cross reference each player to see if its not creating a vacuum of Ash/Bandit mains while forming teams, and the the smurfs, well they need to be excluded from ranked, plane and simple. Of course that would be unlikely to happen so that enforces the need to group even more. You don't have to, but its better and more reliable in your represented rank. You can actually say that you are a true ranker and not a mansy pansy..erm I mean die hard solo artist..
It's always been like that since they implemented the new system.
Check this thread, I posted so many proving screenshots there and the only thing they could do is just denying the fact that new system is worse than previous (IMO the old one was perfect and never had current problems):
