Returning noob trying to pick a path to follow

    Hi everyone!

Thanks for taking time to read this topic. I really do want to know your opinions!

Can you people please shed some light on my conundrum? I have this question - "whom should I play?", and I simply can't find the right answer. I need more information, I need opinions.

So, I started playing For Honor when it was officially released. My most favorite class was a Warlord, for I really loved shield-bearers and vikings. My 2nd favorite was the Conqueror, primarily because of the shield.

Most games that I played were MMOs, and there I ALWAYS played as a tank. Keeping aggro, managing the fight and enforcing my rules upon the field were but a few things that I liked about tanking. You could say I was more of an agressively-adaptable tank. If any of you played WoW, I played a Protection Warrior and enjoyed the aggressiveness, adaptability, versatily and mobility of this class. Now, I understand that For Honor is by far not the MMO I used to play, but since then my love for shields has never truly ceased.

I had to abandon videogames for quite some time. Had a new job, a new place to live, had to move to another country (as I just learned there are a LOT of Chinese players in For Honor, did you know that?), and now I'm finally back in the game. After reading some of the patch notes, watching a bazillion of Youtube videos and guides I thought that I should seek a class that represents my style, rather than my love for the shields. I still do like to play a tough character, so assassins are not really my thing.

So far, after much deliberation I have narrowed down the possible classes that I may like to the following three: Warden, Lawbringer, Highlander. This does not mean that I simply won't play any others - should your opinion be weighty, I will reconsider my choices.

Warden - much like a WoW warrior, this class is very simple, straightforward and adaptable. Howerver, beneath the simplicity lies a very complex scenario that is extremely hard yet no less rewarding to pull off. I like how each and every action that the Warden does may lead to many more steps. His shoulder bash (vortex?) combo feels like a nice way to counter turtling opponents and to punish the OOS. His opening attacks may not be as good, but feinting overhead heavy into overhead light for a crushing counter is just amazing. The sad part for me is that unfortunately, I am only learning to parry and feint, so usually in duels if I manage to parry a heavy or feint I do so absent-mindedly. The concept of parrying Light attacks is simply beyond my understanding, I have no idea how people can parry those flickering centurion attacks. The other part that I am a bit concerned is the defensive side of this character. Yeah, crushing counter is a nice part, however it is only a top attack. If Warden is attacked by some of the faster classes, I don't really see any way he can survive an onslaught (like a Lawbringer or a Conqueror or a Warlord can), say, if you are cornered. I understand that the best way is to keep some distance, but hey, if it says that the class is "adaptable", perhaps there is a way to save oneself in such a troubling moment? Another thing that worries me a lot is while watching some guides, I saw how people go "So I do the shoulder bash, but then I see that my opponent dodges, so I cancel it into a guard break / cancel it and do a side heavy". How do they do that? When I try to fight against the lvl 1 bot, I don't even manage to cancel it in the first place. I push the button, but the shoulder bash still goes. I basically have to push RIGHT after (feels more like TOGETHER WITH) the shoulder bash. I don't get this choice. I basically have to make it BEFORE I do it. How do they decide so fast and even manage to change it?

Lawbringer - I like huge characters wearing heavy armor. Being 2 meters tall myself I can relate =) Lawbringer strikes me as a very defensive character - a trait that I respect, but try not to keep for too long. However, I have noticed that all of his attacks are incredibly slow (except for the top light, which everybody expects you to hit with anyway), and most of his combos rely on scoring a light attack. Thus, it feels that the higher you climb, the more defensive you will be. His Blind Fury and Long Arm are easily avoided, even when you shove or parry. His good sides are his defense, though (that HP is nice). Being able to make an unblockable and uninterruptible Shove after a block is simply amazing (though I feel that assassins may interrupt it) for disrupting your foe and enforcing your playstyle upon them. You are the Lawbringer, after all. Enforcing your rules on the fight is the least you can do, right? Well, another problem here is the same as it is with any class that I play - I still suck at parrying both heavy and light and take too long to build a feint chain in my mind (and even longer to execute it). This, however, is something that comes with practise, I'm sure. I also like his long-range weapon. It sure does give a lot of benefits when you are parried or when you need to get someone off your face.

Highlander - well, this character has stances. Right when I saw it, I knew I needed to try it out. The issue that I have with this class is that... his defensive stance is not anything special, as far as I understood. It's just a simple stance that allows you to block and parry, that's it. His offensive stance is a real beast, those unblockables are nasty (until you climb higher and get parried, I suppose). I am somewhat concerned with his speed, or rather lack of thereof, but hey, I just returned to the game so I bet there are a lot of things I'm missing.

    Honorable mention:

Centurion - what I really like about him is that his fighting style is right in the face. He doesn't have time for the fancy swordplay or distance management. After watching a few videos I figured that he seems to be more or less a one trick pony - get your enemy against the wall - INCREDIBLIS - wombo-combo - done. While aesthetically I like the character, the mechanics are... not as interesting. Perhaps I am wrong though, how would I know? The other thing that sort of diminshes my skill is that sometimes there are a lot of mechanics and chains to keep in mind, so I may score a nice guardbreak on an OOS enemy and... do a light attack. Just... no reason, I have no idea why it happens.

So yeah, this is my question - whom should I play? Any opinions will be very welcome.

Welcome Warrior the Choics is yours to make, but i can give you a few Tipps:
First and Foremost: Play the Class that just feels the most comfortable to control for you, you will be better, with it than with any other Class you Pick. Also you need to learn how to parry, and you will with Time, it's an essentiall part of the Game.

On to your Choices you said you like aggressive Tanks. I think the Warlord would be the Class for you. He can Attack, he can trade, he has a Bunch of HP, Hyper Armor a rather fast Headbutt, and he is the only Class in the Game that besides Conqueror can hold off 4 People at once. His Lvl 4 Feat even makes him able to Self-Revive! I am by no means an Expert on the Class, but Warlord can really, dish out the hurt when he wants to or Turtle up, and become an unpregnable Mountain of Defense.

    The Warden
Well, there is only one thing to be said about the Warden: Easy to learn, hard to Master. Masterful Wardens are a Meanance, but you need to really put Time into him, to unlock all of his Potential. Do you play pn PC? With pressing E you feint/break off Attacks in startup of the animation. When corned you need to Parry, if you get unblockable spammed to Death in the Corner there is nothing ANY Class can do besides hoping for Revenge. Classes with a good Dodge can sometimes dodge out if there is only one opponent. Doing Stuff fast,... well youll get used to it, it takes some time to get the coordiantion into your Muscle Memory.

    The Lawbringer
This Guy is a Counterattacker, don't go at it too Offensive, he isn't made for that, but punish every Mistake the enemy makes.

    The Highlander
Well, you really need to be able to parry. Highlander can be pretty Strong, he has some amazing Feints, but his Stances are as much a Boon as they are a Curse. if you get parried on Offensive, and the enemy brings the hurt to you your'e in a really bad Position. That being said, Highllander is extreamly Dangerous if you are fighting in a Clusterduck! Get offensive and get those Unblockables swinging, you 'll likely hit EVERYONE.

    The Centurion
They nerfed his Wallstun which was good. Centurion now can't one-combo People off a Wall anymore. He still has a combo remaining (his unblockable+ jab + jump attack) that takes about half his opponents HP, he can still really dish out a pretty means Punish, especially if you use his good Feint Game, to your Advantage. He isn't too durable though, if they get the drop on him most Classes can really kill him fast.

Since you were looking for a aggressive Tank type of Character Summary:

    Warden
+ Very Balanced Defense and Offense all around good
    - Not a Tank
    - Hard to Master

    Lawbringer
    + Tankist non Heavy Class
    + Great Punishes
    - Rather Defensive Playstyle

    Highlander
    + Mean Damage output
    + Hyper Armour, can trade
    - Got a Problem with People who are good at parrying to slow Attacks.
    - Not a Tank.

    Centurion
    + Got some mean Combos
    + Good Feints
    - Not a Tank, goes down rather easily

    Warlod:
    + Tankiest Class after Conqueror
    + Good Damage output
+ Good Light Attack Speed for a Heavy Class
    + Hyper Armour, can trade
    + Good Dodge
    - Slowest running speed only second to Shugoki

Another really regressive tank is the raider. I don't play him heavily by a friend of mine did after I turned him on to the play style. Like warlord your grabs are very nice for controlling your surroundings.
Forever, as mentioned you need to find a fighter that speaks to your strengths. Your current chica see very good for that.
    Good luck.
    Die well.
