I tried to gift a copy of the game to a friend but it shows that they already own the game and thus I cannot. Is it because he has the trial version?

Steam. My friend is offline. But yesterday he said he was getting the free trial version. Today I wanted to gift him the paid version since it's on sale. But when I try, it says "this friend already owns..." etc...

Did your friend have the free trial version installed too?
