I know this is a point that Microsoft should help with .. but wonder if anyone here has an idea what gives.

I have an AMD 64bit 3200+ Computer with Windows XP Home and all the goodies. After I installed SP2 upgrade, my computer wont boot up unless I go into Safe Mode. I did a System Restore (successfully) and it didnt work the 2nd or 3rd time either (yep I'm persistant). I even uninstalled the SP2 updates from ADD/Remove Programs.

I have all the latest Video / Audio Drivers and Direct X 9.0b.

    This is bizaar

You cannot use Windows XP SP2 to update the following operating systems:

â"¢ Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition or other earlier Windows operating systems

â"¢ Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Version 2003

â"¢ Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit Edition

Only 1 thing puzzles me ... the Auto-Updater is supposed to analyze your computers and advize you of applicable updates ... so if it sees mine is a 64bit, why did it say to get the update? Me thinks Micro$oft should get their auto-updaters to function better

No, you have XP Home, so it is indeed for your OS. 64-bit was only referring to the OS WinXP-64, not 64bit CPUs. Since you have regular 32bit WinXP, you need the SP2.

Some programs may not be compatible with SP2, which may be why it didn't boot. ZoneAlarm, for one, may cause this.

    - Shame it says 'stupid' 'cos Weatherman is far from that and is so right about the OS (it does say 64Bit OS not CPU )

He posted in another thread, started by Hunter, this snippet:

quote:
Hunter, you think the problem with ZA is related to the new security feature, Data Execution Prevention? It's turned on by default in the system/advanced/performance/DEP tab.

I noticed that my boot.ini now has a /NoExecute=OptIn extension added on after the /fastdetect. And, it's enabled in the tab I mentioned above. From what I've read, the DEP only works on AMD64 CPUs, so I'm not sure why this is enabled on my Barton.

You may benefit from exploring this as well.

I'll add that DEP will be on, and may be in 'Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select.' mode.

Try 'Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only.' mode.
