R6 Community Discusses - Game Modes

Welcome to another edition of the R6 Community Discusses series!

The goal of this series is to open conversation on specific topics so players can share their feedback, suggestions, and share tips&strategies with their fellow players. We encourage newer players to ask questions and for our more experienced users to offer whatever advice they can on the subject. Any posts that detract from the discussion, target other users specifically, or are offensive in general will be removed.

This week we will be discussing the 3 game modes - Secure Area, Hostage, and Bomb

Feel free to share any thoughts you have on any of the game modes, I'll also offer these prompts as a starting point:

1.) Which game mode do you prefer and why?

2.) Which game mode do you find yourself struggling with the most?

3.) How much of a factor is the map when considering your game mode preferences?

4.) Do you feel there are stand-out issues with any of the game modes?

5.) If there was to be additional game modes added to the game, what would you see fitting in Siege?

6.) Which operators do you find most useful on each of the modes? Which are "no-goes" for you?

7.) Are there any mode-specific tactics that you have found effective? Explain.

(Don't feel restricted by these, they are just to help get ideas flowing)

Request for this week: Share a gif representing your reaction when a teammate chooses Fuze while playing Hostage.

I'm looking forward to hearing everyone's thoughts and feedback this week!

You can also join in any of our previous discussions here: http://forums.ubi.com/showthread.php/1620494-R6-Community-Discusses-All-Topics

1 secure area i like its simplicity and i think its a good starting point for new players to learn the maps and get a feel for the ops.

2 Bomb i think you need good coordination as a team to do well in this mode.

3 i will play any map and enjoy them all

6 breaching ops are a must in secure imo you need that Thatcher thermite hibbana or twitch combo to open up the secure site, running without them is a risk. fuze on hostage is also a risk but i will take him there are some maps that you can use him without killing the hostage a maybe catch out a roamer.

Gifs i could work out how to add one from a phone, us old guys lag behind 😀

My favorite game mode by far is bomb, because I think it is much harder to defend two obj sites than just one. It also requires more coordination. However, I think all 3 game types suffer from a distinct problem of every map lacking diversity in site choice due to lack of comparable viability.

For example, money/master bedroom on clubhouse. These two spots are just not viable as the other two sites no matter what. The drop downs cannot be secured and guarded and it iss very difficulty to get a bead on the attackers without putting yourself in a very disadvantageous position. This forces you into an almost exclusively defensive game if the attackers are competent. You can of course put holes in the floors to make the defense more vertical oriented, but the most OPs you can post up doing that are 2 players, which 5 attackers can push, and then post up on the stairs and trap defenders in site due to a lack of sufficient and viable rotation routes.

I am not saying it is impossible to do, but it is distinctly more difficult and substantially less viable than other sites. I would expect for a game like siege, the site viabilities should revolve more around team comp than simply their location. You will notice that a majority of teams will run: smoke, bandit, jager, plus 2. You would also notice that a lot of pro games revolve around playing only the same 2 sites, never any of the others, and I think this should highlight this problem quite well.

There is some team comp choice that goes into the strats for holding and taking each site, but there are sites that it is just simply more difficult (no matter how you set it up) than if you were to take that same OP comp for another site.

As far as the OPs go, I think the same comments people have had over the last two years go still suffice. There isn't an OP I would consider bad to take, except for Fuze on hostage. However, I do think the OPs need tweaking so that their choices have less to do with the innate weapons and more with their active roles (ie. Ash can make quick breaches and entering, but giving her a fast/accurate/low recoil rifle with high speed and a small hitbox makes her more of a fragging choice than breaching choice when taking her, which is something I would more expect with Buck and his skeleton key). But, I think this would be a discussion suitable to separate from this thread, so I'll leave it at that.

Lastly, the game mode addition. I'd love there to be a TDM game type added to help people play and learn certain OPs. T-hunt does little for this since the AI is so dimwitted and slow and normal games can be very unforgiving, allowing for very little player improvement at the lower levels sometimes. Maybe make maps that are specific to TDM without gadgets?

Bomb is the much more interesting game mode, but the physical bomb objects are a bit annoying to deal with sometimes. I feel like being able to peek through the cage that wraps the bomb is really dirty and unfair.
Secure area's lacks the dual site thing that bomb has, but the securing mechanic is much more interesting so it compensates a decent amount.

Hostage is where my real complaint is. I'm fine with hostage tks, it happens, 50% of the time it happens on your team and 50% of the time it's the enemy team. My main gripe is how boring and quick the actual extraction part is at times, very mindless. In many cases simply letting the attackers get near the hostage is a lose condition for the defenders and that's kind of lame.
The cool thing about hostage mode compared to secure area is that you have a moving objective. This as an idea is awesome, hell even the e3 reveal of siege showcased hostage movement. With how it's implemented though, the hostage is rarely ever a moving objective. The defenders can't interact with the hostage in any form aside from reviving, and the attackers more often than not just bolt out with the hostage and secure them so fast that there might as well not have even been an extraction in the first place.
How this is solved I'm not sure. Push the extraction points out a little bit further in some cases, movement speed penalties for escorting the hostage (with smaller penalties for already slower operators), allow the hostage to more reliably get downed rather than dying so quickly as a way for defenders to buy time and change the dynamic of the escort, allow defenders to move the hostage into different parts of the room.
You know what? isn't the hostage supposed to have their legs tied together? maybe even with shackles, so we have to free the hostage first then escort them. All the while the broken shackles make a jingling sound to better help the defenders with retaliation.
All these extra hints would make the game mode significantly more interesting, but then you have to think about how much harder the game mode would be for attackers and it's so hard to justify.

TLDR hostage too similar to secure area, hostage needs to be more distinct but dunno how

I'm not a fan of Bomb but that's simply because I rarely play it.

    New game modes need to be created in order to keep things "alive" such as;

Find and secure - around the map is 3 pieces of intel that has to be protected. (mix of secure area & hostage)
Defenders - prevent Attackers grabbing the intel and escaping out of the building.
Attackers - grab the intel and make it outside (similar to Hostage) however once outside and they've dropped the intel off (they are protected so they cannot be shot for 5 seconds after dropping off the intel) giving them chance to get back in the builder and find the other pieces of intel.

A mixed tactical mode, The map stays the same but all 3 modes can pop up in one match....as a team you would have to change up on the fly to suit what the game throws at you......it could take players out there comfort zone and mix things up.

Hostage makes for games that feel to quick and it hinders the defending teams ability to float more than a few feet away from the room. Secure area and Bomb are great because even if the enemy gets into the OBJ I as a caveira main can run around the map and get into the room without them winning because I wasn't right next to the OBJ.

Personally I feel like the only way to make hostage better would be to make it similar to terrorist hunt where you actually have to sit at the extract point for 5-15 seconds. this gives the defending team a chance to recover from the loss of the hostage.. Also I get that the hostage is un armored and all but if you are using a shotgun and the enemy has the hostage your chances of killing the hostage vs killing the player are pretty 50/50... or you kill both and cause your team to lose anyways.

All in all Secure and Bomb are great Hostage has been off since season 2..

Also maybe I'm the only one here but I enjoy defending the hostage on Terrorist hunt. (Whenever I do play it.) but I think it'd be interesting to add in Defend the Bomb(s) for Terrorist Hunt just so newbs can get a feel for the gamemode without getting thrust into the full force of Bomb only players..

    1. Hostage/Bomb because I hate going for kills and secure area is so boring.
    2. Bomb mainly due to the solo queue and when players are absolutely careless, bomb carrier gets eliminated and causes huge problems. And I prioritize the objective.
    3. Not a factor. But Favela objectives need to be displaced and Cash Room in clubhouse as well.
    4. Bomb is super fun but super horrible if played with a bad team. I also like hostage because defenders are forced to defend instead of running around COD STYLE.
    5. None. But a rules change to the rules would be nice
    6. Hibana and Frost all the time. No goers, none.
