Is the story of the game actually plausible?

I mean, can four elite operatives survive for as long as necessary in order to dismantle a massive cartel?

It is a Tom Clancy title after all, so it's a military fantasy mixed with realism. Wildlands definitely feels more realistic, both gameplay and storywise, than something like Assassin's Creed which is mostly thanks to its Tom Clancy publishing as well as the history of the gameplay itself.

So it brings me to wonder. Would the story of the game actually be possible? Would four elite operatives take down a whole cartel without casualties and with only logistical support from the local friendly guerillas?

As the game is configured? No. Though they have CIA & DEA support as well as the LNs (local nationals-Kataris 26 Rebels); the biggest issue would be completing the mission without a sidelining (as in months long or longer) injury or death. There is no respawn in real life!

Dismantle the Cartel? For how long the Cartel in real life have been targeted by the Alphabets (CIA, DEA, etc. Alphabets), no, 4 soldiers wouldn't be the ones to bring down the organization in control of a country. How things turn out for the country of Bolivia, that is possible without the part of the Ghosts. And on joking side, I doubt even with financial support from the Cartel to the military, they could afford losing 10+ helicopters in a single day, day after day after day.

CIA false flag to start a war. YES.
    Depending on which ending.
CIA partnering up with drug lords. YES.

No, the story isn't plausible because there are no such things as magically endless hordes of Unidad cars and helicopters spawning right on top of their enemies forever. If Bolivia had such an army of immortal wizards then the Cartel with its limited prowess would have been stomped out long ago. Thus, no reason for Ghosts to intervene.

IF Bolivia really had that Unidad Army of relentless Terminators they'd not struggle with a little Cartel, they'd probably rule the entire Planet.

As plausible as believing that the Infiltration helo they were riding in drop bits and pieces of their gear and weapons over this vast area of the country and now the player must grind and grind to get a decent weapon to wreak havoc on the cartel

The Tom Clancy novel "Clear and Present Danger" is a much more plausible version of GRW. Fantastic book, far better than the movie and definitely worth reading for anyone interested.

In the book there were four covert operations coordinating and working together. And just one of those operations (named Showboat) was four teams on the ground (iirc they were 12 or 16 man teams - named Banner, Feature, Omen, and Knife) with air support. The other operations involved F-15s intercepting drug flights, aircraft dropping bombs on cartel meetings, and seizing financial assets of the cartel. I mean, compare all of that to Operation Kingslayer in GRW.

GRW just isn't all that realistic unfortunately, with the limited CIA and DEA assets and a four man Ghost team taking down an entire cartel that's so entrenched within a country. It makes for a fun video game and some cool mission objectives for the player, but stretches the limits of believability with its overall scope.

I mean, the entire purpose of the Green Berets is inserting behind enemy lines and training an armed uprising.

Basically exactly what we are doing in the game.

The real problem are all the firefights we get into and you really can't infiltrate a base like that, especially because weapons aren't that quiet in real life.

That said, the Ghosts have support by the CIA, DEA and ISA, so it's not entirely unthinkable.

It's not believable at all. 4 Ghosts is way too many. All that's needed is one Sam Fisher (voiced by Michael Ironside).
