I think the main problem is that all the player stats have been set back to the lowest level and as you can not re-calibrate any item it is therefore pointless to carry on with the PTS until a fix is put in.
So yes people have probably read the notice about the calibration being disabled but the notice did not say that everyone's player profile will be reset to unplayable.
I think the PTS should go offline until they have found and implemented a fix.

The PTS should never have started in the state it was in.
I write software for a living and I understand if you add new code it can affect other parts of the software that you just can't forsee so you have your PTS to find these.
What beggars belief, I just can't get my head around is the new code added (Gear Sets etc) and they roll it out and it doesn't even work. Didn't they test this stuff when they were writing it?
I put in hours and hours testing over the weekend and it was all a waste of time as far as i'm concerned.
That's why people are annoyed.
