Dan Hay explained he didn't like it when the character would say something and the player didn't agree with what they said. So he made a mute protagonist. Can they at least say the most simplest things like "ok, I'm on my way," and "I'll take care of it," or "don't worry, I'll finish the job" For when you accept a mission.
Anything that is unbiased is basically what I'm saying, with this at least the character acknowledges NPCs. That being said, the character can't have a limited amount of lines, each mission the character is programmed to say something different, but not bias, just a small thing.
Does anybody else agree?
I feel like they should go all in or not at all. If they're not going to have a fully fleshed out character, I don't mind them not even bothering with little one off lines. We'll get little grunts & "oophs" from being hit, or falling from to high a height (about 3 feet in FC traditionally) and thats it I'm guessing. Not really into a silent protag, but nothing we can do about it now, I'll just hold out hope it doesn't become a series norm.
So are you good with the customizable character? Because that's the reason why the protagonist is mute, cuz it's supposed to be the player. The player is supposed to imagine him/her talking to the NPC.Originally Posted by HorTyS Go to original post
Well in my reply I said I prefer the voiced protags. The customization seems a tad frivolous & unnecessary to me. I guess we'll see our hands/ arms, so the skin color will be notable there, we kinda see our legs so boots/ pants can be noticed, but a "create-a-character" in a fully first person game just seems pointless to me honestly... It would be one thing if the clothing options gave us benefits of some sort, like faster running or better camouflage in foliage, stuff like that, but there's been no indication that they are anything but cosmetic. The doomsday prepper pack coming with a hat & jacket just seems like the most pointless content ever since all we'd ever see is the sleeves, whoopty-do....Originally Posted by Canadian Beer42 Go to original post
I like having lines, I could care less about wanting to BE a character, I play games cause I get into the story, like a movie, and if theres NO story, cause the main dude doesnt talk, it concerns me, not gonna lie.
Im sure they have it figured out, and I am curious to know how theyve done it, cause afaik, its never been done.
I agree 100%, having a character that can't talk is bothersome. As well as having a customizable character because not only does it cause you to have a mute protagonist but also because your customizable character has no backstory. And it feels dumb to "imagine" or use my backstory to fill in the gaps.Originally Posted by akilyoung Go to original post
Fallout 4 did perfectly well, your character had a voice though, Far Cry does not, that's the difference.Originally Posted by Viragoxv535 Go to original post
What has never been done? A silent protagonist? Uh, Half-life, FAR CRY 2, Dishonored, Portal, Crysis, F.E.A.R., DOOM, Singularity, Bioshock, Halo:ODST (don't) say hello...Originally Posted by akilyoung Go to original post
And those are just a few FPS with silent protags, all of which had a story by the by.... some of them even fairly decent ones...
Good point. Fallout is less of a 'movie' and more role playing.
Far Cry always had set dialog, and when I heard 'mute' I just pictured the NPCs asking him questions, and him not responding.
But what youre saying makes sense, they would ask questions, and we would get A, B, C, or D to answer back SOMEHOW, but if he cant talk, them how? Sign language?
OR...
Its not that he literally is a DEAF person, but he just has no voice, cause our responses are in the form of answers that we select...just like in older Bethesda games and other RPGs..
If thats the case it proves the devs are diving into a more fully featured RPG style shooter, instead of red leaf, blue leaf, green leaf 'RPG' bs...
And thats good. imo, I always thought they should either embrace the RPG elements FULL ON or ditch them all together. FC3 and 4 were the most half asses RPGs ever. Primal added some new stuff, but still...
Never feels like me in the first place. In Black Ops 3, when I chose my character, didn't even feel like me at all, I just felt like I was playing as somebody else. Prolly cuz all I got to do was change my character. It felt useless. Minecraft, or Ark, you can make your character, make your world, and play with your own friends. Far Cry really shouldn't go down that road, in the end it's really pointless. When you're missing a voice it is so damn annoying because you're not even acknowledging the people around you. In Far Cry 2, I would cringe.Originally Posted by Viragoxv535 Go to original post
Yes, or DOES something I would never do....like all the drug fueled ********.Originally Posted by Sabotur Go to original post
I felt SO detatched from those scenes in the past 3 games. They are so stupid, and unrealistic and add a very negative influence in the game. And the syringes....SMH, ya lemme run around pick leaves, put em in a syringe and shove it in my arm. **** like that is game breaking to me.
There are other ways things can be done that are more realistic and relateable. Im not saying a game HAS to be realistic OR relateable at all though, but since Dan said they were going for that in this game, I hope they addressed these issues, especially since the dude is a freaking COP.
Energy drinks? Yeah, that makes sense.
Steak and Eggs? Yup
Cola....cheeseburgers...diner food....all yes
Have different food items replace the syringes!
I digress, off topic sorry...
