When was the first time your friend logged in AFTER the champion status and scavenger crates were released? If he logged in a week after, he probably missed his chance to claim champion status and crates. This is the same for round and season rewards. If you leave it too late, the game will not reward you. Otherwise people would be able to have long periods of downtime and log in after every season to claim ALL of the rewards.

Also, get your friend to submit a ticket. Nobody here can help your friend get the season starter bonus.
