The recent weeks have been full of good decisions, but we still have some issues. As allways i will try to suggest some possible ways to fix and clean up this mess, because that's what this game is quite frankly, a mess. I am not willing to give it up yet, but that doesn't change the fact that For Honor is a terrible game with big problems other games wouldn't have.
What For Honor tries to be, is a new, unknown competitive fighting game, with new and fresh concepts. To choose this path is a brave decision, Something like this does allways have a lot of room for errors. especially when it comes to pvp. That being said, For Honor does have a lot of errors, and to fix those errors is a challenge, and far from easy.
We all are well aware of these errors. I won't talk about the network/matchmaking here because personally, i don't care about those things at all. What I care about, is gameplay. Fair, balanced gameplay. Fairness, is non existant in for honor. That's just how it is in the moment. With the current hero balancing, you either play cancer, or you die by cancer. How do you win a duel? you pick the most defensive class, or you pick a hero that is able to use quick zones or even zone flickers.How do you win the other game modes? You play in a group that consists of the heroes with the most/best unblockables. Said unblockables are fair in 1v1 fights to some extent, but they are game breaking in group fights.
So how do we fix this mess? It almost feels impossible, But it really Isn't. You are allready looking at the defensive meta in the moment, I'll patiently wait how this turns out. The other issue, the zone flicker, is also being loocket at. so what remains? Fast attacks in general are a big problem, and the 50/50 needs to be changed dramatically. Fast attacks are unfair, because heroes without fast moves can't create any openings unless they parry. That's a problem on console more than pc, but instead of plattform specific balance, let me suggest something else: priority.
What are the classes that can't compete with others at the moment? The slow ones. Why is that a thing? they are constantly disrupted by faster attacks. a Raider can't play agressive, even after 1.7, because his mindgames are interruptable. He can't force his mind games, he is allways going to be stabbed when he tries to do that. He would have much bigger chances in combat if you added priority to his heavies, or to his unblockables. That would allow the Raider to trade with his large healthpool, A Conqueror can't play offensive either, he does only have one option, his shieldbash. The light attacks are to slow and to easy to read. The kensei has similar problems, however, his range and evasion are good enough to even fight PK with ease, I don't know if he needs the priority or not.
With priority acting as a counter against fast moves, we only need to look at the 50/50s. They are unfair and unfun, for both the attacker and the defender. How can you change that? That's not as easy as the other suggestion, but i think that the 50/50 moves should behave like the Raider/Kensei softfeints, instead of being pure guessing games.
So, let us review. the 4 big balancing problems, are defense, zone flicker, fast attacks, and 50/50 moves. With the defense and zone flicker being looked at, two problems remain, fast attacks and 50/50s.
Fast attacks can be fixed if you add priority to the slower heroes, because that will give every hero a fair chance to trade blows, and doesn't restrict any class to use parries only.
50/50s, should be turned into softfeints, so that a small time window for reaction still remains if your first response was wrong. The shoves and shoulder bashes should behave like the Raider and kensei soft feints.
Those fixes will make the hero balance more fair for all plattforms, but most importantly they will help the console players because said players won't need to parry valkyries. If you give us methods to fight without parrying, the framerate won't be as big of an issue on console. Currently, I am forced to pick a hero like PK or valkyrie because the slower heroes can't win a fair fight.
So that would in theory end our struggle with 1v 1 fights at least. how do we fix team modes? First of, remove or drastically nerv the feits. The shinobi is only balanced because of his low healthpool. How is a feit that restores his health balanced? how is a feit that makes a light feel like two heavies balanced, like the berserker feit, or the sharpened edge feit? how is a one hit killing catapult balanced? The feits are not fun to use, they only cause frustration among the players.
And when it comes to the unblockables in 4v4 or even 2v2, the fix is very simple! make unblockables useless against revenge mode! the shield bashes and shoulder bashes are very unfair in certain situations, but if said moves don't work against targets with revenge, they won't be unfair any more.
