In the coming season, legenary gear will be rewarded after a match starting from prestige 5 on. From prestige 7 on, you will only get orange gear drops, meaning you will never be able to get a pruple gear drop. However orange gear gives a small bonus to all three stats instead of huge boni to 2 stats with a big penalty on the third one. Now I want to use purple gear on at least slots because I do not care about block damage or cooldown etc. That means players who are currently prestige 5 get a better variety on how to gear up compared to the ones who are already prestige 7. Am I mistaken?

Have a look at the powerpoint with all the details about the revamp on the ubisoft site. There is a diagram which indicates that from prestige 7 on you do not receive any purple drops anymore. It is the same as now where you will not receive any blue gear after you hit a certain level. You've got a couple of things wrong, actually.
Not every piece of orange tier armor will be in the "three minor bonuses" format; it is a new stats permutation being added (only on orange gear), but the "two up, one down" stats will also be available for orange gear.
I do not have a direct quote, and can't remember if this was said in last week's stream or if this was a response from an Ubi employee here on the forums, but all previous gear visuals will be available on orange tier gear, meaning that while you will not get grey/blue/purple gear drops once you hit Rep 5, those same visual styles will be available on orange gear.
