I made this guide on reddit and decided to post here
So you just bought for honor, and you are not sure how to get into things, I've decided to make this thread in order to help new players to find their footing in this game this is by no way an advanced tactics guide I will touch briefly the basics and send you to some more advanced guides.
This game got a steep learning curve but it's a great game and I love it! Got around 250 hours in already, it will be hard at first but don't be disheartened there are some great people in the game (a lot of salty once also) but stay friendly and talk with people and usually people will do the same.
A little about myself, I'm an average player, I win some I lose some lately a bit more winnings than loses, I played this game since closed Beta on PC, started with a raider got him to rep 9, then a PeaceKeeper to rep 1, Valkyrie to rep 3, and finally settled on a main with my conqueror at rep 7 ATM.
I play this game on pc and with mouse and keyboard so I'll use the my layout in this guide
So let's get to it: Classes at the time of writing the guide there are 12 classes 4 for each faction broken into 4 divisions: 3 vanguards (all-around heroes) 3 heavies (more tanky slow heroes) 3 assassins (fast canon glass heroes) and 3 hybrids (a mix between the other divisions)
Feats:
In some game modes (4v4s) you can have feats unlocked on your hero, you unlock them by killing, resurrecting, capturing objectives, each char have a total of 12 feats which be all unlock by the time you get to level 19 on each hero in each battle you need to chose a total of 4 feats (each rank has 3 to choose from)
Gear:
Atm the total gear score is 108 each gear score has a total of 18 levels, you can get gear from playing the game or opening loot crates, the gear system is about to get revamp but each gear slot got 3 stats like attack, defend, etc.. I will not get into it atm (will update in the future) just a golden rule you start getting heroic gear at rep 3 from loot crates so don't buy or open crates until then
Game modes:
This game has 5 game modes:
Duels:
Duel is 1v1 with no gear stats and no feats, first to win 3 times win
Brawls:
Brawl is 2v2 with no gear stats and no feats, first team to win 3 times win (some players like to fight this like 2x 1v1 where you fight you opponent and if you win you go to the other wait for it to be over, some people like to go all out and fight like a proper brawl, 2v2 and some will finish their guy first and jump into a 2v1
Dominion:
Dominion is a 4v4 point capture mode with gear stats and feats enabled where are 3 controlling Zone on the map A, B, and C as you capture a Zone you start getting points for holding the Zone 1 point per sec all classes can boost by staying in the zone (heavies get the added value of unlocking their feats faster) they get 2 points per sec if they stay and defend,
assassins get more reputation killing another player (rep towards unlocking their feats) Hybrids get the same amount of reputation whatever they are doing, and Vanguards get more points farming minions.
when an enemy step into a captured zone it becomes compromised the controlling team stop getting points until the threat has been taken cared of or ran away. Capturing a zone gives 100 points, taking a zone from the other team also reduce 100 points from the other team first team to get to 1000 points and killing all 4 enemies after it wins Zone B (point c on the shard map) is controlled by minions in order to capture it you need to kill all the enemy minions on the zone and you will capture it, this zone cannot be boosted
Elimination:
Elimination is a 4v4 brawl mode with gear stats, feats enabled and power ups (heal buff, shield buff, run speed boost etc), first team to win 3 times win, you start as 4 separate duels across the map and here again you have to choice to stands and fight or to run and help a team mate, collect boosts etc first team to win 3 rounds (killing all the other team) wins the match
Skirmish:
Skirmish is a 4v4 brawl mode with gear stats, feats enabled, power ups and respawns, in this mode there are no rounds both teams start together and the goal is to reach 1000 points by killing the enemy team, after getting to 1000 their respawns are disabled and you need to finish them off Skirmish rewards kill streaks. first kill is 5 points, 2nd is 6 points, 3rd is 7 points. And so on. You also get more points if you can kill your opponent with no intervention from team mates, solo kills, but no one does that cause ganking is easier. Executions also grant a bit more points of course.
War of The Factions
War of the Factions is a global, persistent, and cross-platform event that brings to life the ongoing war between For Honor’s 3 factions: the Knights, the Vikings, and the Samurai.
the war has 4 seasons (the first one was won by the vikings) each season has 5 rounds and each round is 2 weeks long.
a round is won by the faction who has the most territories by the end of the round, you can contribute to the war effort by manually deploying assets after every multiplayer fight of any mode (you don't have to deploy in the same game mode zone that you have just played but you get extra 20% assets if you do)
Faction War rewards: the players of the wining faction of each round get 3 loot crates, second place get 2 crates and last place get 1 loot crate
The winners of the last season (Vikings) received extra 5 loot crates, an exclusive head ornament for each of the 12 heroes and special golden emblem border, samurais and knights also got emblem borders (silver, and bronze)
the next season starts on the 16th of may.
Some phrases you will need to know and abilities you will need to learn:
Blocking and attacking:
this game is pretty straight forward in this aspect you have 2 basic attacks lights (left mouse button/R1/RB) fast and low damage, and heavies (right mouse button) slower and higher damage attacks (right mouse button/R2/RT), attacks can come out from left, right or top, use your mouse movement to change from where the attack comes out and your press the button, want to confuse your enemy? Keep your guard to the right, and change the guard to your left right before you press the attack button
Blocking:
you can block attacks by keeping your guard to the left right or top, you can see where your enemy guard is set by 3 directional arrows on him except for assassin classes you can't see their guard until the start the attack but as soon as the attack start you will see a red arrow with the direction you should block
Guard mode:
locking on your opponent (ctrl on keyboard L2/LT ) and activating the attack/block directional system some characters have special out of guard mode abilities
Guard breaking (gb):
the ability to grab your opponent (middle mouse button/Square/X) for a follow up of either heavy attack, light attack or a throw this cannot be blocked and it doesn't use the attack direction system but can be counter guard broken, the first few frames of your heavy attack can be guard broken and can't be countered but this is pretty inconsistent though and depends on the character doing the heavy as well and their attack speed.
Counter guard braking (cgb):
when an opponent guard brakes you, you have a window of opportunity to counter his grab and to push him away by pressing the gb button (middle mouse button/Square/X) after some practice it will become easy, in some situations you cannot cgb like in mid dash (raiders are the exception) or when recovering from a missed attack or after being parried.
Dash:
the ability to dash away or to your opponent in order to cover a distance or to avoid being hit, certain characters has a follow up from this move, while you dash (space bar/x/A and any direction) you leave yourself open to a free gb that can't be countered unless you are a raider
Parry:
aside from blocking and dashing another defensive move is parrying an attack, this is done by pressing heavy attack in a specific tight window in the direction of the incoming attack (both light and heavy attack), successful parry award you in opportunity to punish your enemy and also drains his stamina
If you parry a Light Attack you get a free Heavy Attack (any direction).
If you parry a Heavy Attack you get a free Light Attack (any direction).
The characters you can't GB after parry depends on the attack you parry. Nobushi in general, LB heavies, Kensei heavies, Valkyrie in general, and basically other long range attacks.
However each class can still punish these moves with something else. Like a raw top of side heavy instead of a GB heavy. Each class has a different one so you will need to learn them to know what to do.
Revenge mode:
taking enough defensive action will reward you with something called Revenge Mode, so you can take the fight back to your enemy.
On the bottom left of your screen you’ll see a meter for Revenge Mode, which will fill as you defend. Doing things like blocking and parrying will fill the meter up. Once it’s full, you can hit the R button\triangle\Y to activate Revenge Mode. This will envelop your character in a golden aura, and give them a slight boost to both attack power and speed.
This can be a useful tool to use when you’re finding yourself overwhelmed by one or more enemies. Make sure to save your Revenge Mode for the right time to launch an attack against your enemy that they won’t be able to come back from
Stamina:
every attack that you preform cost stamina when you do not attack your stamina replenish, some attacks from heroes also drain the enemy stamina, when out of stamina you moves are slower and your attacks are slower, and also if you are parried when out of stamina you will fall to the ground and cannot block an incoming attack, also a throw out of gb will knock you down
Unblockable attack:
some attacks cannot be blocked and can only be parried or dashed out of, this attacks are noticeable by your opponent glowing orange
Feinting:
All classes excluding the conqueror can feint their heavy attacks some can even feint their light attacks, this is done by pressing the E/Circle/B button after you start attacking, this is great for baiting you opponent to try and parry you so you in turn can parry him and punish him (keep in mind that your opponent can feint his parry attempt which results in funny feinting battles). you can feint your attack in order to bait your opponent in to try to parry or you can attack from a different direction or even a gb
Zone attack:
An attack the hit multiple attackers around you performed by pressing both heavy and light at the same time
Executions and resurrections:
A player can preform an execution after killing an opponent with a heavy attack by pressing Q or E/Square or Triangle/X or Y when you get an onscreen popup, beside looking cool executions are a double edged sword in all modes beside duels,
When you execute your opponent you are healed, the longer the execution is the more health you get BUT once you started an execution you are committed to it, and in that time you are open to be attacked, bashed and even gbed. An Executed player can not be resurrected.
A player that hasn't been executed or environmentally killed can be resurrected by a teammate in a short window of time, by standing on his corpse and pressing E/Circle/B
Combo:
2 or more attacks chained together
Steel:
in game currency used to buy cosmetics or to upgrade gear along with salvage
Salvage:
when dismantling unwanted gear (your inventory has only 60 slots) it breaks down to salvage which is used to upgrade gear along with steel
Further more salvage is accumulated per faction and shared by whole heroes of the same faction
Environmental kills:
Ledges, spikes, fires, geysers, traps all can be used to kill the enemy by throwing him into them, some players consider them to be cheap tactics, some don't I love them they make me laugh when I use them or get killed with em
Ok so now you know the basics but what about the heroes?
Let's get to know them, since I only played some of the heroes I'm going to link here a YouTube guide to every hero from KLYKA for honor hero school guides, every hero that I picked up I watched those guides, they are amazing! Very in depth guides some of them almost an hour long.
Vanguards:
The Warden:
The Wardens are powerful, noble warriors dedicated to the defense of their land and their people. Striking a balance between defense and offense, wardens wear partial plate armor with chainmail and leather. Wardens wield massive two-handed longswords for slashing enemies and blocking attacks. Trained to be proud, loyal, and brilliant diplomats, the Wardens are expected to embody the highest values of Knighthood. Many set out to achieve this, few do. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-REK9Hm0cjk

The Kensei:
The living incarnations of Bushidō, the samurai way of the warrior, or as close as one can get. Masters of multiple martial arts, they are trained from infancy to fight and die for their emperor or their fellow samurai without asking why. Kensei wear heavy armor and fight with the nodachi, a longer version of the katana that cleaves enemies in a few elegant and powerful strikes. Kensei spend their lives fighting and training as they strive to attain a level of perfection few other warriors can ever hope to achieve https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4qycZA9Uyo
stream: LucasFioDois (https://www.twitch.tv/lucasfiodois) -also plays Valkyrie from time to time.
The Raider:
Fighting with heavy two-handed axes, Raiders are always found at the forefront of the Viking horde, hacking through enemies crazy enough to stand in their way. They are clad in leather and iron rings, with their bodies covered by tattoos – souvenirs from past battles, which they bear proudly. These relentless warriors embody the Viking ideals: boundless bravery, spotless integrity, and unbridled passion. They know the moment of their death has already been chosen upon birth, so no Viking fears to follow their destiny. Of course, they all intend to bring as many foes with them as they can https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B56LasfLHRA

Heavies:
The Conqueror:
Ex-prisoners and forced conscripts who have risen to the rank of elite soldier. Originally pressed into military service as sword fodder, those who are skilled enough to survive are promoted out of the rank and file and given heavy infantry training. They are heavily armored warriors, relying on a defensive style and their massive flails to whittle away at their opponent’s stamina until they fall under the Conquerors’ massive onslaught. Climbing from the lowest ranked to this prestigious role in the Knight’s forces, Conquerors have earned the respect of their peers through determination and feats of arms. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0H3ZFSeULXY
Twitch stream: https://www.twitch.tv/invictigaming , NeekoKnight (https://www.twitch.tv/neekoknight)
The Shugoki:
Shugoki appear slow and cumbersome. Don’t let that fool you -- they possess the strength of a demon and an unbreakable will. It takes incredible fortitude to be the guardians of your people. You must defend them at all costs and put their needs above your own. This has never been an issue for the Shugoki. Their weapon of choice seems unwieldy. But in their hands, it is as deadly and precise as any blade https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTnfyJi_j2k
stream: SophieMcSophieface https://www.twitch.tv/sophiemcsophieface
The Warlord:
Not born into leadership. They’ve had to earn it through blood, sweat and steel. To be a Warlord means a life of service to their people. Their shield protects those who cannot fight—their sword will cut down those who would attempt to cause their people harm. Their fighting style is simple yet brutal. You will always find them leading the charge https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbx0clyauLw
streams: Petemoo https://www.twitch.tv/petemoo and SypherPK https://www.twitch.tv/sypherpk
Assassins:
Peace Keeper:
Quick, lethal, and can win a fight before their enemy even knows they are there. It takes a special type of warrior to be a silent blade. Theirs is not a legacy of glory. They are an instrument of death, wielded to turn the tides of war. You may never see them. But you will feel the difference they make and the trail they leave behind https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPLAf8z04eg
streamers: Keehu (https://www.twitch.tv/keehu) and KingRichard15 (https://www.twitch.tv/kingrichard15)
Orochi:
The Imperial assassins of the Samurai. They roam the battlefield like ghosts, terrorizing and slaughtering those unfortunate enough to cross their path. Lightly armored and trained in the arts of stealth and deception, the Orochi dispatches enemies with a katana. Usually loyal beyond reproach, the Orochi holds the darker samurai secrets of dealing death in myriad ways, from throwing deadly knives to using a poisoned blade https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJOTpSIIvAI
streams: ScottJund (https://www.twitch.tv/scottjund), Praise The Sun (www.youtube.com/user/praisethesunpvp) and Hhhhmmm1 https://www.twitch.tv/hhhhmmm1
Berserker:
Chaotic and brutal dual-axe-wielding Vikings. Their savage love of combat strikes fear into the hearts of most, friend and foe alike. The Berserker fights relentlessly, capable of vanquishing foes before they can mount a decent defense. Unconcerned with their personal safety, they care little for their own defense, focusing instead on killing as many enemies as they can https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huNL3J_G1Yo
Hybrids:
Lawbringer:
The Lawbringers are justice in Ashfeld. They enforce the laws and dispense punishment and retribution without mercy. Their armor is without equal, their signature weapon a grim reminder of the ultimate punishment for lawlessness. They will go wherever they are needed – pray that you are on the right side when they arrive https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwSu5_nu8mI
stream: Galahad94 (https://www.twitch.tv/galahad94) will be back for season 2
Nobushi:
The defenders of the villages too far from the Imperial City for the army to reach. They are elegant fighters with a curious weapon. They have the lightest armor that allows them to move like the wind but cannot take a lot of damage. But don’t let their appearance fool you, they are one of the most effective fighters the Samurai have https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyXREUv4p1s
stream: paiin0 (https://www.twitch.tv/paiin0) and Kinseymister (https://www.twitch.tv/kinseymister)
Valkyrie:
The Valkyries have made a deal with the gods. They will fight and earn glory so that those who can’t will be counted in the halls of Valhalla. They are scouts and trackers who use their spears and shields to deadly effect. They are chosen by the gods—pray that you never encounter one on the battlefield https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3Bqi0iD8KE

"5 important tips when fighting against every class. A quick reference sheet!" https://docs.google.com/document/d/1...BU/mobilebasic
Now for a few tips of mine:
When just starting the game especially on pc where it is easier to do, be talkative be friendly
As a new player you would like to start with the practice mode and advanced practice, I cannot stress this enough it will take you through the basics
Try the story mode and will showcase the heroes and let you play them, I really enjoyed the story mode and also it gives you steel and loot crates
When you step into multiplayer start with duels or brawls where the gear does not matter, state that you are new player, when I see a new player I usually pace myself and give some tips especially if it's a hero that I know how to play, some people won't and will stomp you, be ready
when you have trouble with either understanding your hero, or fighting against one, to go into the "how to play" section and select the lvl 0 bot, then proceed to learn the characters move set and when he is able to do what and what followups you can expect. understanding your opponent is crucial and this might help to some extent
There is an option the fight Vs AI pick a game mode and change it from player vs player to player vs AI use it to train and get familiar with your hero
Dominion vs AI is great for leveling heroes fast to get to rep 3 where you start getting epic gear from loot crates
HAVE FUN, remember it’s a game and a great game, be prepared to lose a lot at first this game has a steep learning curve, and ignore the ****heads some players don't know how to lose and can be toxic, laugh it off they are basically just angry at their own inability to win
Play the hero you like, the way you like to play it find what make it works for you, ledge, spike and throw if you want to…
PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE
Hope this helps, if anyone has something to add or correct me please do and i will update the guide
Also I would also like to add dedicated streamers for each class, got a Conq one need More streamers
I would really like to thank to everyone who contribute to my guide i will keep it updated as the game progress
I would like to thank the mods for sticking this guide, I hoped this guide would get attention and it did,
and I would like thank ubisoft and the team for making this amazing game, I know you guys are still ironing out some issues but this game is heading in the right direction, /u/mrericpope see you in the next warriors den
Uplay: AsGoodAsAi3 add me if you like to team up and wreck havoc
